Should parents differ what their son can do and what their daughter can do? Should they both be treated equally or not?
This was the topic between Neeraj and me, not that this is the first time we are discussing this. I am a TRUE believer that sons and daughters should be treated the same. If a son wants to do a job abroad, a daughter should be able to as well. I think that parents should be careful and know what their children are doing at all times and who they are with, but otherwise it shouldn’t matter whether they are a girl or a boy.
Neeraj is facing this problem in his home with his younger sister (she’s my age — 21) where his mother and brother are giving too much freedom to his sister in aspects to her job. She has been traveling around Rajasthan and staying with friends or colleagues, they are not really sure with whom though. Neeraj finds this very disturbing and says that his sister should stay in one place and work. His point is valid and I think as well that she should stay put if her job allows it (which it does). I think though that his mother and brother, who are encouraging his sister, should also know the whereabouts of his sister at all times (just like they do with Neeraj).
When I was college, I faced a similar situation. My brother, who is 18 months older than me, could be at college (which is 15 minutes away and you have to go by the highway) at midnight with friends and if I am with my friends, hardly 5 mins away in the same city as we live at 11 pm, then my parents would be calling me or would be pacing the floor when I got home. Now how is that fair? My parents have now understood (they don’t agree, but understood) and are much better about it but I keep them informed all the time as well.
So ladka aur ladki ke main koi faraq?
