Maa ki zubaan = Hindi?
Current Tune : Maa tujhe salaam
Recently, I was having a conversation with a friend of mine, Vidya about languages in India. When our Thursday “mandir gang”
gets together, all of us speak Hindi except for Shiva and Vidya. Shiva can understand it but doesn’t speak it, and Vidya hardly understands it. They are from Tamil Nadu and moved to the US about three years back.
Toh ek din hum log ice cream khaane gaye toh Papa ne koi comment maara aaise hi Shiva par yaa kuch (theek se ab yaad nahi hai ). Toh Papa ne Vidya ko poocha, “Vidya, kuch samaj main aaya?” She said, “No.” Mumma and Papa both said that its high time that you should learn Hindi. She was saying that its because they don’t teach it in the South, that’s why she never got a chance to learn (plus she has never TRIED to learn either :irked:).
I got involved (of course!) and told Vidya that you have to know atleast our mother tongue. She said that Hindi is not our mother tongue, then I asked what is the mother tongue of India? Of course, I know what she is going to say: Tamil. Umm, no,
that would be a state language just like Gujrati, Punjabi, Sindhi, etc. Does India have a mother tongue? What is Hindi? Is it a state language? Why don’t they teach Hindi in the South? Why is there always this division between North and South? ![]()
I stayed put with my argument and told her that Hindi is the mother tongue of India because more than 90% of the population can speak Hindi. Yes, its important to know your state languages (even I know my parents’ state languages - Gujrati and Punjabi) but I also know Hindi as well. Now if you get all of the different people together from each state, how the heck are you going to communicate?? South Indians would say: English. If you get someone like Laloo Prasad Yadav (Manpreeu’s role model ) sitting in this group then you can be quite sure that he doesn’t know a lick or split of English. Then everyone SHOULD communicate in Hindi.
I don’t really understand the argument where you can say that Hindi is not our mother tongue. Come on yaar, your state is important but more important than the rest of the country? Then the point I brought up with them was why do you watch Hindi movies? Do you watch other any of the other states’ movies?? That makes Hindi different from any other language:!:
What are your views on this? I would love to hear what you think about this matter.
On another note: I tried to download Mozilla last night so that I could fix the problem with the left bar. The minute after I tried using Mozilla, I couldn’t access my website.
Not only my website but Monty’s and Devesh’s as well. Then I gave up last night and thought I would try this morning. Still the same problem (even after uninstalling Mozilla). So now I am writing this from my home PC where I am able to access the site just fine (but yaar, I would rather be using my laptop ). If anybody else is having problems or might know why this is happening, please let me know.
Alvida.

Main fir se yahan aa tapki… ashaa kartin hun ki aap log jyaada mere se pareshan na ho rahen hon :p…
Haha… ok and entire sentence of hindi!! Phew… usually I speak what they call “hinglish”!! But baat sahi hai… hindi toh logon ko aani chahiye…
meri problem to kuch aur hi hai yaar… hindi toh aati hai lekin khud ki matri bhasha nahi aati :|
Agar is angle se socho.. toh it’s kinda good that people from different regions give more preference to the language spoken in their state/region than the language which is commonly spoken in the entire country.. kyunki hindi ko zinda rakhnewale toh bahut hain… lekin regional languages ko zinda rakhnewale zyaada nahi. And Poonam…most of the people know about 2 languages… actually dekha jaye toh sabhon ko 3 aani chahiye-regional, hindi and english…. but ek usually choot jata hai..
ab kya kar sakten hain yaar… unhe nahi aati toh nahi aati… seekhne ki ichcha hogi and mahaul hoga toh seekh hi lenge :)
July 29th, 2004 at 1:13 pm
point well made - but if sab yehich sochne lag jaaye ke hindi ko zinda rakhnewale bahut hai…toh phir actually rakhega kaun?
mere ko just yehich baat nahi maloom thi ke South main toh seekhaate hi nahi hai Hindi.. kya yeh galat baat nahi hai?
They don’t seem to even it recognize it as our mother tongue. The importance of your state language is granted but Hindi is as well important.
3 languages - i think that’s better than what they teach here in US (just English until 9 std. when you get to choose between learning Spanish, German, and French). Very sad..very bad.
July 29th, 2004 at 1:19 pm
Punnu.. abhi ek email kiya hai… jaldi se reply karna..
and about the point I made.. well the best part about my points are ki bas hum hi aisa sochten hain… aur sab aisa nahi sochte … isiliye dont worry.. apni hindi hamesha alive and kicking rahegi :p :D

Things are not so bad in south. I stayed in Bangalore for about 10 months. Most people there, know English, Hindi, Kanada, Tamil & Telugu. It’s just in Tamil Nadu, that people don’t speak Hindi. Even if they know it, they won’t converse in it at all. Once I went to Chennai, i had really a hard time explaining directions to the auto-wallas. They know just Tamil, no hindi, no english :irked:.
And, yeah I second Monty’s idea of making Punjabi compulsory throughout the world
HoHoHoHaHaHa
Chak de phatte!!!

If I’m not mistaken, Hindi is not taught in the Tamil Nadu’s schools and I think is an optional subject. There’s another aspect to it: People are stubborn and governments use consensus by pleasing the crowd. The situation is worse because in TN, rural population virtually rules.
I’m a south Indian, Marathi by mother-tongue, Kannada by state-lingo and Hindi by nation and english to the world. My normal dialogue in and outside country is always in Hindi with compatriots. A practice by choice. In my state hindi is compulsory and I commend that.
Not many realize how wonderful hindi is esp. when you add the spice of bombayish slang to it :)
July 30th, 2004 at 10:27 am
It was funny - yesterday I was visiting some guy named Carthik’s website and he had a page called “100 things about me”. One of the items that he wrote was “I cannot write in my mother tongue, Tamil.”
[Rash] Changa hai chotu (i am going to call Rash - chotu :rotfl:). Punjabi log kinne meethe hai..aur zubaan bhi.
Bolle toh chak de phatte!
Aur yeh sab baatein about plane ticket…kya Monty Singh tum kya apun ke liye bhi aur Neeraj ke liye bhi Chicago-Heathrow-Mumbai ki ticket bhejogai??? Apun ko Rashu ke saath travel karna hai!!:lol: Yeh wali bahen kya shaadi main nahi aayegi?
Ridhish ka comment apun ke bheje main bhi koi jamma nahi…ab woh hi aayega aur batayega.
[Chetan] So you speak Marathi? Very cool. I have been thinking for a while which part of India you might have been from and I had guessed in my mind Bangalore but thought u might speak Kannada.
Lagta hai thoodaa galat ho gayi.
So Hindi is taught in Tamil Nadu schools? Well that’s good to hear but it still seems that they don’t recognize it as their maathru-baadshaah.
I just think that it would be nice if we could all communicate in Hindi in India and that have the option to speak our state languages with anyone in our state.

Monty, you guys have to visit Delhi… maybe I will invite you sometime over there.. and will show you guys the true Delhi…
Nowhere in India (even in mumbai) you get better food than delhi…
Winters bole to.. i love delhi winters… That foggy weather… hot cup of tea & coffee… whooa! and ice-cream in icy-weather… who can resist it…
Delhi:
- has wider roads… best city to drive your car…
- great food.. as i mentioned above
- great crowd… bangalore/pune sux in comparison….
- large houses… in mumbai… houses are so expensive and so small…
- and i can go on & on…
I LOVE DELHI
August 3rd, 2004 at 12:37 am
[Manpreet] - Yeh invitation mere aur Neeraj ke liye bhi hai kya??
Mera last experience in Delhi was not so great… kabhi fursat main bataongi. That was three years ago..ho sakta hai ab change ho gaya ho. Tumhare itne kehne ke baad apun Delhi ko ek aur baar try denge.
August 3rd, 2004 at 12:55 am
Anytime… kabhi bhi delhi mein tapak jana.. i will be there to do the mehmaan navazi :)
Aisa kya hua tha 3 saal pehle… that you guys have developed a strong dislike for delhi..
November 20th, 2004 at 2:36 pm
:O do v think alike? I posted a similar message at Orkut long -2 time back. You can check it out here [requires registration - if someone needs an invite then let me know]. It is a 10 - 20 page long discussion where ppl from almost all over india write about it.
Now I don’t Orkut anymore because
1.) It is too slow
2.) Theres no way to track messages or new posts.
3.) No search at all
The starting concept was good but now if Google doesn’t introduce the above mentioned features then its not worth.
November 20th, 2004 at 3:20 pm
Oh well, we can’t change anything — just are able to voice our own opinion.
December 20th, 2004 at 4:46 am
agree with u cent percent… there has to be a national language, and Hindi qualifies the bill perfectly…India ko chhodo people can speak Hindi in Nepal as well…

South indians have contributed so much for the country by other means. Most of the money that goes to UP & Bihar coesm from the south. And you guys keep talking about our patriotism. I wish that there should be more powers to the states so that the states can manage their won funds and each state has to depend on themselevs for their growth. if that happens, people would just leave thoose hindi spekaing north indian states to soouth & west looking for green pastures.
July 8th, 2006 at 1:25 pm
In Thamizhnadu, we need not teach Hindi in schools.
If a person go and stay in North India, with in three months he definitely will learn hindi.
In the same way North Indians coming to Thamizhnadu should learn Thamizh. Lots of my north indian friends are speaking Thamizh very well.
Only few North Indian people only have to change their attitude and accept other languages as Hindi only not being spoken india.
Thamizh Velga.
July 12th, 2006 at 9:46 am
Yes, Madhi is correct.
How North Indians are particular about Hindi, We Thamizh people are very particulat about Thamizh. All other sounth indian states should realise it and thier language only should be given first, second and third place in their state. It is very sad that Kannada is alomost routed out in Bangalore. In Hyderabad also with out Telugu and knowing hindi you can survive amd this is to be changed.
All the languages to be preserved in India and not only hindi.
