DVD..VCD…what’s the diff?

Current Tune: Time Kharaab Hai

Yesterday Sudhanshu (who works at my dad’s business) came to the mandir after being gone for about three months in India. Because he stays in Mumbai, he had said that he would stop over at my nani’s house and bring anything that they wanted to send. We knew that he would be coming sometime in July, so we had my didi in Mumbai get Mumma and my suits all tailored. My other didi, Pooja Didi, also got married in December, and I wanted to see their wedding video.

So my nani and mama sent the CDs and assured us that we can watch them in our DVD player or on our PC. So when today Mumma was showing me the CDs , and I tried to play them in either place but had no such luck. Then was talking to Raju Bhayia who told me that these are VCDs. Well what the heck?? What’s the freakin’ diff and why is there one? :irked:

I would think that they would play in my DVD player but it comes back with “Error”. Even the DVD player in my laptop is not reading it. Gadbad hai… :banghead:

So now we have about 15 cds in my house that we can’t watch. Argh. :grumpy: I was so excited to see everyone too in the videos! Our last hope is Prasad and Kavita who might have a converter so will speak to them tonight.

Jo bhi banda ne yeh VCD aur DVD ka funda banaya…bilkul soch nahi raha tha. Arre just choose one and make it unified all over the world.

Today was the last day of the project. Sunday night I am leaving again for Chicago (this time it will only take me two hours max). Then I have training from Monday to Saturday! :grumpy: I am not excited at all to be working on Saturday.

Abhi ke liye Alvida. Jai Mata Di.

[UPDATE: 14th Aug, 2004] I have now bought an Apex DVD Player from Sears for 36 dollars. The good news in this — we are able to watch VCDs!

And hum hamesha yahan pe itni aasani se first kaise ho jaten hain!?!?? :p  Love it:razz::smile::lol:
Anyways you have a nice weekend

  2. Poonam says:

    Raam Raam.

Ab kuch DVD- players mein khali DVD hi chalta hain..sab mein nahi. Why dont you try to run the VCD on a proper CD player. It might work.
    :)

  4. Poonam says:

Raam Raam Escapist jee –

proper CD player main play karenge..phir dekh kaise paayenge? Matlab toh ke yaa toh DVD player hota hai yaa toh CD player hota hai. Kash yahan US main VCD player milta..problem hi nahi hoti

  5. Manpreet says:

What? Don’t tell me that you don’t get VCD players in US??

I have a Panasonic DVD player, and it works fine with all kinds of disc, whether its VCD, DVD, MP3, Picture CD, WMA etc etc.

Here in India, there are plenty of shops that can make DVDs out of VCDs. Shayad US mein bhi hongi… Find it out.

  6. Poonam says:

I need to make a VCD into a DVD, is that possible?

Waise hamara puraana wala DVD player main chalti thi VCDs par woh kharaab ho gaya. Aur hamara naya wala (Sansui) main woh read nahi kar raha.

Tumhara Panasonic wala aacha hai. It seems that it is compatible with everything. That’s great!

Shayad investment karna padega ek doosra DVD player main.

  7. The Escapist says:

Bahut hi ajeeb aur “gareeb” desh hain USA..:duck::razz:

  8. JaI says:

    Yo poonam!

no they dont have a place that converts VCD to DVD here in the US. These ppl dont even know the concept of a VCD, cause there was a direct transition from VHS to DVD here, there was no VCD phase, like in india.

Windows media player on any computer does support VCD format, and you should be able to play it in there.

also – there are some “progressive scan” DVD players that u get here too which support VCD format.

  9. Priya says:

ditto ditto to whatever jai said…waise upar se nikla mere…to my knowledge-we can play vcd’s on dvd players and if not then on any PC…

  10. Poonam says:

[Escapist] Baat toh sahi hai..dekho toh sahi ek VCD ko hum play bhi nahi kar sakte. :faint:

[Jai & Priya] Thanks for the info, but I still have some questions. First of all, I have the newest laptop on the market (that I got from my job) and its got a DVD player & all. I was FOR SURE that it would work in there but its not even recognizing that I have put the VCD in my D: drive. At that time, it occurred to me that maybe the VCD was not created properly?? What do you think because it HAS to be able to play in the laptop.

We used to have an Apex DVD player that we were able to play VCDs on but of course, that does not work anymore.

So you have companies that you know for sure that is VCD compatible? Otherwise I might get the Apex for 40 bucks @ WalMart.

  11. JaI says:

i know that panasonic and sony make some DVD players that support VCD and .wav formats. We have an apex player at home, and same problem it doesnt play VCD’s. Best thing to do is…go to the store and ask em about it, am sure they will be able to help you out.

  12. Monty says:

This is news to me !!! I didnt know VCD’s didnt exist in US. & i always thought a DVD player could play anything under the sun.

US ka itna naam hai lekin saala saadiyal desh hai. Bad with mobile phones, bad with DVD players! Sux.

Poonam, there is a way to convert VCD’s into DVD and your best help would be Devesh as he is the DVD pro ;)

  13. Poonam says:

[Jai] – Thanks for the info. You just have to be careful, like you said, because sometimes it plays and sometimes it doesn’t.

[Monty] – Yep there is no concept of VCDs in America. Like I said, I wish the person who created these this and DVD would have just thought a bit harder and made one unified product.

America is just known for $$. Technology it is still behind in many ways. :faint:

That’s good info to know about Devesh. I will first check to see if I can get another DVD player that might have that capability because our old one you could watch it. Plus, DVD players are so cheap these days. If that still doesn’t work, then I will talk to Devesh.

  14. Ankur Raheja says:

What is going on here… I will give you the simplest solution

Send me all the movie VCDs, my DVD player will be able to play them and I will email you the story :rotfl:

  15. Poonam says:

    Whoooo very funny Ankur! :rotfl:

Thanks for the WONDERFUL offer, but I just bought a new DVD player for $36 and the VCDs work.

The VCDs are of my cousin’s (Pooja Didi) wedding so you would be SO confused in trying to figure out who is who! :rotfl:

  16. Ankur Raheja says:

Good to know you have bought a new DVD player and u r able to play VCDs.

But in case, you face the same problem again in future. Do remember me.
    Offer is OPEN forever :rotfl:

And no need to thank you.
That’s what friends are for…

  17. Poonam says:

Aawww how nice. Sure I will keep in mind for next time.

The same goes on the vice versa — in case you have DVDs that don’t play you can send them to me.

  18. Ankur Raheja says:

ya … ya … sure why not :hyper:
