IE, Mozilla, or Firefox?

Posted on September 4th, 2004 by Poonam

I just downloaded Firefox and so far I like it. Still lots of experimenting to do. I have noticed the left bar problem — kinda looks all squished.

I am thinking of maybe just doing a new layout/template — fixed width like Monty, Manpreet, and many others.

OR We could stick to this one — but we need a favor.

Please tell us which browser you are using? IE 6, Mozilla, Firefox, or something else?

Thank you. We would give you a Gmail invitation for helping us out — but most people have one. :rotfl:  Ok - bad joke. :rotfl:

    I’m using IE6.

Waitng for another GMAIL invitation

  2. Poonam Says:
    Cool Ankur. Thanks

Do you want an invitation? Neeraj has plenty to give out now.

  3. Ankur Raheja Says:

    Just Kidding

    I have GMAIL account.
    Thx

  4. Poonam Says:
    Any time dost

Who needs a Gmail acct. when u have Ankur@ar.com or like me with np@np.com, sahi baat hai naa?

  5. Ankur Raheja Says:

You are right  but even then 1 GB space can be used to store lots of personal data.

  6. Chetan Says:

I second fixed width. They give you better control of how your text flows. Goodluck with the new layout if you’re designing one.

I use Firefox exclusively—which is the most standards compliant browser as of today.

  7. Poonam Says:
[Chetan] - I just am experimenting with Firefox since this last weekend. One thing I don’t understand is why it doesn’t work with my firewall (BlackIce). The minute I turn on the firewall - Firefox cannot connect to my website. Weird.

The new design is in the works — trying to find a nice photo or something to use as a header. Let’s see how much longer it will take me.

  8. Monty Says:

    IE6 here.

Since you are talking about the right browser, ever thought about the right email client. Outlook’03 or Thunderbird?

  9. Poonam Says:
Hey Monty - I am pretty surprised that you also use IE 6. (just because you are up to date on all this stuff  )

Is there a reason why you don’t use Mozilla or Firefox? Have you tried it or thought about trying it?

I read a few things about Thunderbird — and frankly I prefer Outlook 2003. I recently got the upgrade CD from Accenture and since I have installed it — it works awesome. I think the organization powers it has can do wonders if you know how to use it. I wouldn’t even think about changing email clients (I don’t have a choice @ work but even for home - Outlook all the way).

  10. Chetan Says:

Poonam—It looks like BlackIce is the culprit not Firefox. Firefox is an internet application. You’ll need to configure your firewall to allow access for Firefox. This basic rule applies to all firewalls. Unless you tell your firewall to allow a particular app to access internet, it will block it. Btw, why don’t you use ZoneAlarm. It’s the best firewall there is.

  11. Poonam Says:
Oh i see. I don’t have a choice — its my laptop for work so I can’t change my firewall and all. Just have to use what I got. Thanks for the info!
  12. Monty Says:

Yep tried Firefox, but didnt find anything extra ordinary about it. For a while I used Avant, coz it offers the same features that Firefox offers like Tabbed browsing, popup blocks etc etc, but am back to IE.

I tried Thunderbird too, but got back to Outlook’03.

  13. Chetan Says:

Poonam—Just look under BlackIce and see how to add a new application to enable it to access internet. There must be an option.

  14. Poonam Says:
[Monty] - I think I remember when you used to use Avant. So far Firefox I have liked. I am using that and IE 6 back and forth. I don’t think I will switch email clients. Outlook 2003 has everything that I want.

[Chetan] - All done my friend. Its now working fine in Firefox with the firewall. Thanks!

  15. Beth Says:

Hmmmm… I use Godzilla or WhiteFire. Ha! :hyper:

  16. Poonam Says:
Oh Beth, you crack me up! Godzilla! Mozilla’s long lost brother! :rotfl:

WhiteFire! You should copyright that now, that’s a good one! :rotfl:

  17. Sushubh Says:

Looks like i am alone here using Opera full time. Along with M2 for mail… Also for RSS and IRC…

  18. Manpreet Says:

Its IE6 & opera for me… yes, i use both of them :p

For email, its Outlook 2003 all the way..

  19. Poonam Says:
[Sushubh] - I have only heard about Opera thru you. I will have to find out more about it. How does the site look on Opera? M2 is which company’s product? I haven’t heard about it either.

[Manpreet] - So you are there to keep Sushubh company in the Opera category. So which one do you like better Opera and IE as you use them both? Yes, Outlook 2003 is great.

  20. Sushubh Says:

Opera is technically not free, so people just don’t give it a go. M2 is Opera’s internal mail client. Rocks. Very intelligent software. Packs a lot of punch in 3.5 megs. Just have to get used to Google ad… ofcourse you can buy it… I plan to buy it as soon as I get some spare cash with me :)

  21. Poonam Says:
So they have Google ads? Hmm. And its not free? So are you using a trial version or what? Because you say that you are going to buy it so just wondering. :???: I thought there had to be a drawback because you don’t hear many using it. Cool. Thanks for the info!
  22. Sushubh Says:

    Hmm… Let me explain a bit more…

Opera is free. With ads. It means you can use it for ever… a small ad would be running at the top. As long as you do not buy it.

There is no trial period. No nag screens, no popups asking for registration. It works as a regular software.

It has a browser, IRC client, mail client, news reader, RSS aggregator. All packed inside 3.5 Megs.

Next version will have voice support… That means, you can tell Opera read pages to you, and you can tell opera commands to follow.

Everything is optional of course. You can use it as a simple browser.

Not many people use it. Because:
    1. Firefox works well as a browser. And it is free.
    2. There seems to be a feeling that if a freeware good alternative is available for commercial software, then the commercial software making company is greedy. I have read people saying many nasty things about Opera, just because the company does not give Opera for free.

Here is an old post about Opera in general. Not the final word.

  23. Poonam Says:

  25. Poonam Says:
chota sa nanha sa pyaara sa baccha?? :rotfl:

tumhari baatein se toh nahi lagta ke tum aaise ho

  26. Sushubh Says:

oh yeah? ask my last girl friend.

oooh wait, that specie does not exist. :rotfl:

  27. Poonam Says:
Does your new girlfriend exist if your last doesn’t? :rotfl:
  28. Sushubh Says:

i threw my last girlfriend off the roof after i had an argument with my mom…

it had a pentium 100 with 16 megs ram. her face was the size of a 14″ monitor… though i still have her heart with me… the teeny tiny 1.2GB harddisk… :rotfl:

  29. Poonam Says:
    One word: nerd  :rotfl:

    just kidding.

  30. Manpreet Says:

Sushubh bhai there is more in life than these silly computers :rotfl:

  31. Sushubh Says:

    :irked: no there is not…

    ‘nough about me…

  32. Poonam Says:
:rotfl: Enough about you already? We are just getting started, right Manpreet? :rotfl:

  34. Vikas Says:

    Hey…
Now that IE7 has arrived having the “tabs” feature of Mozilla and Firefox included with it. It has started running great for me. Though I still use Mozilla as my primary browser ( I use all three for various purposes, u know m n I.T. guy)
Merits of all of them are:

Firefox: Most comfortable for an avid end-user, who opens and uses many-many sites at a time. So many plugins available
    Mozilla: Fastest of all.
IE: No tabs in IE6 (though now they are available in IE7), but the problems with Session across two instances or tabs, are minimum, with IE.
