Is it me or are Hindi movies just getting sleazier?
Its getting harder and harder to watch ANY Hindi movie promo with my parents.
Sad isn’t it? I remember back in the day when we would watch for upcoming movies like Hum Aapke Hain Koun (my fav, btw), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge, 1942 A Love Story, um…. what the heck happened?
I know that Hindi movies goes through phases like the family drama phase, action phase, mystery phase, war phase, and I guess this is the sex phase. But please; Hindi movies have now degraded their standards to B-graded movies. Nothing against sex movies and all, but if I wanted to watch them, I would go see a porno movie (which btw, won’t happen in this lifetime) — but what’s the point of showing it on the silver screen?? Yes we got a lot of perverts out there who are flocking the theatres just to watch Neha Dhupia wear a thin blanket over her body, Amrita Arora dripping wet in the rain with barely any clothes, and Mallaika whatever-her-name-is having sex with every Tom, Dick, and Harry she finds.
Admit it, people these days don’t go to the movies because they want to see the story and plot of the movie, its to go so they can see these girls wear close to nothing or acting that they are having sex.
Now the argument goes both ways: what if it wasn’t girls being shown in this manner and instead it was guys? Yes, we went through that phase with Salman Khan taking his shirt off every two seconds in a movie and even then it was uncomfortable watching that with my parents. I don’t say that you shouldn’t show it — but the whole freakin’ movie shouldn’t be based on it!
And if you are going to do it, be a little decent about it. I am the LAST person who will say anything good about Hollywood movies, but they do this kind of crap movies all the time, but their promos aren’t totally based on the sex scenes. ![]()
So what our young adults in India have been so sheltered from sex that all of a sudden they are revolting and wanting to see these movies? Is that why every dang movie that is being a hit these days is due to some girl taking off her clothes?? This is India, not Amish country where we are covered from knowing or learning about sex in school or college or some time in our life prior to becoming a young adult. Its because of these young adults that more and more movies are being made on sex — basic rule of economics: demand goes up, supply goes up. Get it?
Mr. Anupam Kher, who is sitting on our censor board at I think a high position, stop making your appearances on shows like NBC’s ER and start doing your job on the board. There was at one time where the censor board made such ordeal about the scenes in Kamal Haasan’s Hey Ram movie, where are you (to the board, in general) now?? It was just recently I was reading somewhere where Anupam Kher was quoted on saying that today’s Indian teenagers are getting out of our hands due to the media. If you realize it Mr. Anupam Kher, then please do something about it! ![]()
If you can’t do it by yourself, then persuade other people on that board to take your side. If you are strong about a matter, then you will fight for it.
What do I want? I just want some better movies in the pipeline and get out of this phase. This phase won’t get us an Oscar — which many Indians cry for. Stop promoting these types of movies and maybe our directors will come up with something better. Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar, and Sooraj Barjatya…the movie industry needs your help.
Alvida. Jai Mata Di.
I hear ya poonam. I havent seen good movies coming lately too, and about the censor board, yes, they’ve been quite lenient about the whole thing. I was shocked to see a movie like Julie pass through the censor. It was quite a bold film, and as far as i can remember, remmeber very bold scenes too. But then, if you see, such movies never really do a lot of business. Its those homely family movies that are always a HIT.
The Last hindi movie I really liked was.. Ek Hasina Thi… I guess that says something about this…
[Monty] – If these movies weren’t doing well na, then directors would stop making these types of movies. But of course, as you can see, these types of movies have increased only because the junta is showing that they want to see these types of movies. You just need one movie, like Murder, to get directors on the bandwagon.
[Rash] – Saw the promos for that movie, Ek Hasina Thi and even watched parts when it was on Zee Cinema, even that movie didn’t seem anything extraordinary.
Poonam, movies are like Rakht & Julie are not Hits yaar, just they do enough business to get them a little profit. Maybe its the craze of the moment, and would fade away.
Movies like Rakhi & Julie ****
Oye Monty par apun ne toh Rakht aur Julie ka toh naam bhi nahi liya. These are examples of sleazy movies. Murder was a hit.
Not too sure about your second comment.
And profit is profit yaar. Any director/producer wants to make a profit – so if this will do it, then why wouldn’t they join the bandwagon (which coincidentally is what I think is happening currently). Making profits is the name of the game.
Ya, quality of movies churned out by Bollywood these days is reall bad.
Why movies only.. see the various music videos… its seems that the directors barely have any budget for clothes…
Maybe thats why some of the people from bollywood are releasing the likes of Sholay, Mughal-e-Azam, etc again.
The last good movie was… damn.. i don’t can’t even recall a name…
Ek Hasina thi was good… so was Koi Mil Gaya.. Kal Ho Na Ho was ok as well..
Yaar second comment was just a correction thinggie. In the first comment, i wrote Movies are like rakht, Julie are…..
So just typo error tha :-)
You make a good point Manpreet. These remix music videos are horrible these days! I was watching Chartbusters on Sony TV the other day with my full family, and Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar, the remixed music video was playing and my parents were so disgusted as if they would never watch that show again! It was pretty shocking and distasteful.
I am telling you the key here is – the less you promote these types of movies, the less they will make them. Let’s get out of this phase soon!
Got ya Monty.
I thought it was some typo of some sort but even I didn’t catch it when reading through your 1st comment.
dont bang ur head so hard (
)… might lead to memory loss and turn ur married life into some star plus comedy series replica. ;)
Well Sushubh – since I am still kunwari..married life ka toh koi problem hi nahi hai.. yes after neeraj and i get married..i will quit banging my head like this
teenagers n adolescents really don’t go out to see these kinda movies… well atleast me n my friends don’t… we prefer the hollywood stuff a lot more…
You and your friends are in the minority Abhi because if young adults didn’t go to see these movies — then directors would have stopped making them a while back. We have had three very bold films before that we had that Ek Choti Si Love Story. There will be a few more like this before this phase is over..
I don’t understand y ppl. r so offended by these kind of movies? I agree that its hard and uncomfortable to view all this stuff w/ family….but Indian society is under a tremendous change right now. Young audience are in plenty and are targeted by the “businesses” (including films). Its just that the young adults like this kind of stuff…if the majority of the audience was old (50+) then probably we would have seen more of bhajans, yoga, life after retirment, gardening…kind of products/music videos/ movies. There was a time when everybody liked to watch chota garib boy who stole a peice of bread from the shop and start running….during the process of running he turns into an angry young man called Amitabh Bachchan. Those movies were also bad if seen frm different angle….they promoted smuggling, {bread stealing}, other types of crimes, voilence…. but then that was a phase. Its just the fact that how u look at things. For somebody living in America, an 18 year old unmarried girl with a baby won’t be a big deal, but thats not the case in India. Similarly, kissing isn’t a big deal @ Delhi or Mumbai but it ‘d b a big issue for people in a village.
Do you watch Mtv (American) while sitting with your parents? (I guess no…). So, I think we should let the society (majority) decide what is right for the whole community and take our own decesions like not watching chartbusters when sitting with the family or drop something and try to find it when something not so cool is on :P
I think there is a reason to get offended by these movies Gaurav. These movies are too raunchy even for the Hollywood mind. Come on yaar, a 15 year old guy having sex with his teacher??? What the hell is this?? What do our naujaawano (teenagers) think after seeing these movies? What is the point for Bollywood to even have a censor board if everything is going to get passed??? All of these bakwaas movies are C grade movies that should be shown in those theatres that show porn.
I don’t agree with you at all when you talk about targeting crowds. These movies are not made to target crowds but are made on what sells. Murder was a big hit and ever since that we have had every raunchy movie to hit the theatres. Why? Because they want to join in the bandwagon and think that if sex sells once, why won’t it sell again?? That’s the bottom line and that’s just wrong.
If society starts deciding what we are going to watch then we are going to be in trouble. Soon enough porn will be the next best thing and it will hit every big theatre just because society wants it? That’s what will happen if you put it in the wrong hands and I think that’s the reason we initally had a censor board. Its just has gotten out of hand and we have to get back to what is filmmaking. These bogus movies aren’t films — they are just raunchy, testerone-building movies.
15 yr. old w/ tchr :-? wot movie is it?
I think its the society (majority) decides wot to do and wot not to do.
Its true that filmakers joined the bandwagon but they r businessmen. Y those Bell Bottoms rn’t sold these days? Thats simply law of demand and supply… what is demanded by the consumer….is suplied by the manufacturer.
I never was or am for the Censor Board. Y the heck do they stop people from watching stuff that Anupan Kher or Asha Parekh thinks isn’t worth watching? I think Censor Board should be there only to put rating on the movie. They can restrict youngsters frm watching the stuff which they think isn’t right for them but y do they have to stop an adult from watching anything in the whole world? If a particular adult doesn’t wanna watch porn….malika’s movies…then he shudn’t watch it, y do they have to cut/censor all those scenes which may be even 10% want to watch? They can definetly rate the movie as 21+ or prono.
O one thing u dont realise that they hv to add sleaze so that the movies run FULL HOUSE in B n C segment cities where porn is not available and they would not go to c english movies… so for that segment of ppl this is heavenly sent n the producers n directors goto the bank with pocketfull !
Poonam u will b shocked to c the videos ! they are just horrible !!! i mean nething done with taste would be ok but here the idea is to sell either tix or CDs. I hvnt seen one decent video in ages… some of the hindi videos are a partial copy of English song videos incl the clothing… or rather the clothing only ! theres one video where this girl is dressed like christina A. n other where its Beyonce… n IT DOESNT LOOK GOOD ON THEM ONE BIT !!! but who is going to stop them… it sells !!!
I personally feel censor board is Redundant, well coz I didn?t get the concept why should some 4-5 people decide what others should watch I mean aren?t people.. wise enough to decide if they wish to watch particular movie or not I agree with what Gaurav said its same as demand and supply.. well just there should be restriction on its availability depending upon the which audience only point .. these been there things like sleazy movies porn etc its just coming out and becoming more easily accessible to people and children which I feel something should be done to stop it shouldn?t become easily accessible to children but for a mature audience they wise enough to decide what to watch and what not to watch why should someone sit like a nanny ?censor board?
Poonam you said that society shouldn?t decide which movies to watch or not I mean then are these people who sit on censor board are they outside the realm of society? coz I always heard this clich? thing ?these people on sensor board are people chosen from all ways of society so that they give unbiased opinion about movie? this statement is crap totally because its natural a 20+ cant decide what a 50+ should watch and vice a versa and its came very unrealistic all agree and watch same thing and people on sensor board are usually people who are in there 50+
The last good hindi movie which I saw and was very good I really like the movie ? Phir milenge? coz it had a message.
Well usually almost all English movie which I seen till now.. have been good u can say they entertaining all 95% of them but
Cant say the same
about hindi movie.. some are weird only few movie come out good I mean once a blue moon out of 100-200 released only probably if luck 1-2 might turn out to be good
Gaurav, the movie is Tauba Tauba.
Society only plays the part by going to the theatres. Who flocks the theatres to see this raunchy movies? Men only. They are not society, they are just men who want to see these raunchy movies. That doesn’t mean that these movies are in demand that is what society wants. Does that make sense?
Censor board. I don’t think that those American standards (abt. the ratings and all) would gell in India. Its just too difficult to card youngsters for their age like they do here in USA. That’s why the censor board is there. They haven’t been doing their job lately and if they would pick up the slack (hopefully with Sharmila Tagore we will see a difference :???: ) you will see these crap movies like Tauba Tauba not get passed. They are not helping anyone in society and let me tell you for those who want to see porn, there has to be something better (I wouldn’t know but I am guessing) than watching a 15 yr old boy have sex with his teacher!
I have two comments on this Kunal.
1. Its really sad that this happens what you have depicted. If people go see Murder just for the sex scenes because porn is not available, then they really need to get a life.
2. Veer Zaara just released and I bet it will go full house everywhere for the first week just because of its starstudded cast (and there is no sleaze in that movie).
Sometimes I sit and watch Chartbusters with my family and recently even we saw all of the new vulgar remix videos that they have come out with. Its really quite bad that they have ruined these great songs by doing these vulgar dances and clothing.
I totally agree with your point there Kunal. If the younger generation retracts and stops promoting these types of videos, that’s the only way it will stop.
Puneet, I think that the censor board might not be the true answer but it is definitely a temporary answer. Agreed that they are not the realms of society which I don’t think we would be able to get either because its government controlled, but I think that they are there to stop the vulgar and sex that children especially shouldn’t see.
Totally agree, but how do you stop from it being so readily accessible to children? By not making it at all? Yes. That’s the answer. Why do you need to show vulgarness and these horrendous sex scenes on the silver screen??? Isn’t that what porn is for?? Do it on that screen, not in Bollywood.
Why is this an issue now? Why was this not an issue in the 60s, 70s, and 80s? Is it because India is now modern and they want to do what Hollywood is doing? If that’s the case then they have it allllll wrong.
Let me tell you Puneet, that you just cannot compare Hollywood movies to Bollywood just because of the culture differences (lots more is accepted in US than in India). I watch the TV promos that they show for Hollywood movies and they are full of crap — they are usually worst at times then Bollywood, but on the contraire they know how to handle it. They don’t just pick on a theme and stick with it like we do in Bollywood movies. Sex is part of the film..fine…but these days Hollywood has been doing a better job in showing the decency of it then our Hindi films. Its really quite sad.
I don’t agree with that. I think that is a socialist (dictatorship) approach. It is the authorities fault that young children can sneak in theatres where 18+ movies are being shown or they can buy a Rs. 100 VCD from the local movie store.
I still remmember a quote from one of my sience teacher (tution) in 10th class. He was talking about benifit/risk ratio. He said – Although a lot of people die from water borne diseases and even more get lot of diseases but still we don’t stop drinking water. So not making “those” movies isn’t an answer to get the children away from all that stuff. If u stop making those movies then they’ll find someother way. They can easily get a officialy C grade movie from that same local movie store wala and watch it or will logonto net or will watch britney’s videos…. so u can’t just stop them by not making movies.
So the society/govt/authorities should try to find out ways which can stop teenagers from accessing such things
Do you really think that the authorities can check properly when you have this mob of people trying to enter the theatre??? Here in the USA its much more of an orderly fashion when you enter a movie threatre, but not in India. Its just too hard for them to check plus how many people in India carry around their Identification Card which would have their age listed? Its a good thought Gaurav, but something that can’t be implemented in India.
So I am saying that there is a better solution to making these movies/videos less accessible to children. One of the best things that I think should be done is more parents should take responsibility for what their children are doing and watching. Keep them busy in other stuff such as schoolwork (as we know that school is very tough and rigorous in India). Get them involved in activities such as sports or fine arts instead of them sitting at home watching TV. Lastly, know who they hang out with becuz if they have the wrong friends they are more able to do the wrong things.
I never said that we should ban these movies because like you pointed out with your science teacher example, its too hard to do and too many loopholes. But there are solutions to get around the problem and I think its necessary to implement those only.
The government has found a way, atleast I think they believe that they have found a way, which is the censor board. I don’t think you will see much action from them. Society. Aren’t we part of society??? If no one takes an action, nothing gets resolved. Authorities? They won’t do anything because they are all about money. Making money.
Well, Rakht was bullshit in its entirety and to just catch an Amrita Arora (of all people!) in a wet-scene after sitting thru two hours of crap, well…God bless those souls!
As regards JULIE, i just dont know why the producer/director was hell bent on ruining the film with its sleazy promos. They made it sound like some sex film, when,in reality it was NOT. Agreed there were those hot scenes, but they were quite well done.
And though I did not buy the argument of Julie becoming a prostitute just becoz she met wrong men…the emotion of a small town girl trying to find true love again and again did strike a chord somewhere. Esp, in the end, when true love does come her way, she is so wary of it, that she nearly looses it… it was not a bad story and the film was overall pretty entertaining…and whoever did Neha’s dubbing has a lovely voice , fraught with emotions!
MURDER was a clever adaptation of UNFAITHFUL..and had similar love scenes as the original…
But yes, TAUBA TAUBA was painful and no, the boy was not eyeing his teacher…she was his neighbor…and the film made me nearly puke! On similar lines, KHWAISH was abs shit and made only to show Mallika’s body and nothing else!
PAAP was fine, as it had its touching moment, and JISM was too good… i dont think anyone can find that vulgar!
