Current Tune: Woh Kisna Hai - Kisna

I have finally put photos up from the India Trip. They can be viewed by clicking on Our Photos on the navigational bar. If you do not have the User ID and Password to view the photos, then email Neeraj and myself at np [at] neerajpoonam [dot] com.

I took some random photos around Mumbai as Neeraj and I tried to discover what this city is all about. One of the things that I had noticed on earlier trips as well, but always remained a mystery, that I asked Neeraj on this trip is the photo below. What does it mean: HORN OK PLEASE

Horn Ok Please

What are your ideas? Let us know. Neeraj really didn’t know, and the only logical thought that we had was that it means that the truck wants you to honk at them, at the same time he is responding with an OK. But why have that on your big truck/semi? Aah…one of the wonders of life I guess.

Three more days until my father is back with us in the states. I can’t wait.

Alvida. Jai Mata Di.

hahaha you know … I saw this sign a lot when I was in India :hyper: I think they want you to horn so they know that you want to pass them … because trucks are very big and if you notice they never use their side mirrors when driving, hahaha I took the pic of that too :hyper: I will upload the pictures soon hopefully

    have a nice day

Ohhhhh god I h8 Mozilla. I wrote a long comment here and was trying to open another tab pressed Ctrl+R (typo) and it was all washed :((

Let me try and write again.

“Horn Ok Please” means that they are polietly requesting you to honk at them when you wanna overtake.

Didn’t you notice “Use Dipper at Night”, if you or someone else doesn’t know what it means then - it means that use your dipper instead of horn at night. Dipper is when you flash light using your low and high beam.

Another common phrase written at the back of Indian trucks is “Buri Nazar Wale Ter Muh Kala.”

Some innovative ones that I noticed when I was In India.

    “Phir Milenge.”

“Buri Nazar Wale Tere Bachche Jiyen, Aur Bade Horak Tera Khoon Piyen.”

On a truck carying LPG or Petrol or Diesel- “Mera Bharat Mahan” and below it “Highly Inflamable” // this one is not their innovation, but a coincidence.

Reading stuff written on trucks and autos was my favorite pastime while traveling. The famous qoute written mostly on Autos and on some trucks reflected India’s family planing scheme “Hum Do - Hamare Do”

    Here are some images:

    Maa Ka Aashirwad

    Thy Boat (in B’desh)

This one carries good people only
    :D

I think this comment will go into moderation co I have more than 2 links :p

  3. Aaina Says:

Yeah, I think Mona is right. And the ‘OK’ is just there for saying that the truck is…umm…er…okay, I guess. Anyways, life is full of mysteries and this is another one of them.

  4. Nupur Says:

    Hi Poonam,
    1st timer here.
You write well. I will have to go thru lots of posts here I guess!

Well…take care and enjoy ur time with ur dad.

  5. Govind Says:

Hmm, what Mona said right. In india, they hardly care about side mirrors or even traffic rules.

When I landed in Hyderabad, after coming out of airport saw a traffic police shouting at van driver, which is making lots of pollution. And that driver, did nt even care to hear what the police is sayin and went away. :) And the police, took it litely.

Anyways, nice observation!!. Am going to check the pics now. Horn OK please. ;)

Hats off to you guys for being able to maintain this long distance relationship! Very few couples are able to do it.

  8. Ankur Raheja Says:

    Horn - Please use horn.
OK - Then they ask… is it OK with you
(as otherwise they have other means to make you understand )
    Please - Expressing politeness

Very true Mona. We had similar thoughts about it. But is it really necessary to write it in that fashion on the truck? It just seems kind of odd. Thanks for your thoughts!

Sorry to hear that your comment got erased Gaurav. Nice insight. But why is it just on trucks if its for overtake? Shouldn’t it also be on other vehicles such as auto ricksaws, taxis, or even cars/sumo? Nobody uses their mirrors in India and everybody is overtaking? Anyway, it was just an observation we had..

Life is full of mysteries Aaina. You got that right.

Thanks Nupur. We appreciate that you have stopped by our website. Hope to see you here again. Yup, my parents have been in India for the past two months. I just got back from a three week vacation there myself but now am ready to have the whole fam back in the USA. That’s why am awaiting my parents return.

Wow Govind. I don’t think that Mumbai was even half as bad as I thought it would be. I think traffic in general could be more organized in India, but this was just interesting to see on a truck. If its the bigger vehicles that have this, then they should put it on buses as well…they drive the roughest in Mumbai. I hope that you liked the pics!

Thanks Sasha! Appreciate the nice words. It is hard to have a long distance relationship..but Neeraj and I are very dedicated to each other…and now ready to be together. Thanks for coming to our website, hope to see you back here again soon.

Since when has India become so polite Mr. Raheja??  :rotfl: Sahi hai bilkul. They definitely forget the politeness when they are on the road overtaking each other like crazy! :rotfl:

  10. Ankur Raheja Says:

    Since 1977…

  11. Mannat Says:

“Horn Ok Please” simply tells the vehicle behind the truck/bus, that its ok to honk at them. It follows the rule of “precaution is better than cure”.

  12. Anat Says:

the most common phrases at the back of lorries is “horn please” and “use dipper at night” and also “OK, tata” but some drivers tend to be innovative and interleave words of these slogans- like ” use horn ok please dipper” with ‘horn’ & ‘please’ painted in a different color and ‘use dipper’ with a separate color.
TATA is the company that manufactures the lorries so they write “OK” right next to tata or above tata so that it actually reads “OK,TATA” … we use “TATA- as if we are bidding “goodbye” to the vehicle behind us.
