Some news on my front…
My father is back with us.
I went to O’Hare airport in Chicago to pick up my father last night. I am glad to have another person in the house along with my brother. Now just waiting for two weeks to pass when my mother will also be back home.
Until then will enjoy the days with the bro and the dad.
Today, Papa was reading the India Tribune, a regional newspaper that we receive giving us info on what’s happening with NRIs as well as in India. It had an advertisement to receive three new channels: Star Plus, Star News, and Star One. Wow! That’s great!
My family already has Zee TV, Zee Cinema, Sony TV, and TV Asia, we can add three more to the programming, very simple. But of course, its not that simple. ![]()
Right now, we get our programming from Dish Network, but guess who is giving away the Star Plus channels? Dish Network’s competitor DirecTV.
How horrible is that!! So that would mean that we would have to get another satellite, another receiver, and other programming in order to get those three channels.
Why do they make it so difficult??
It would have been really easy if Dish Network would just provide the programming, and we can just add it to our list of channels. But now that their competitor has it, we would have to get English channels (its mandatory) + Hindi channels (the three mentioned above) which would cost us about 70 bucks a month.
We are already paying 45 bucks to Dish Network for the two Zee channels, Sony, and TV Asia and another 30 bucks for cable.
So what would have to be done is get rid of the cable (becuz we will have English channels thru DirecTV), and keep the Star channels + the Zee channels. That totals to be 115 dollars per month for just TV.
Too much. Just too much for right now…but wish it was more affordable.
Alvida. Jai Mata Di.
Yeah…I heard this just couple of days back. But I also heard that Dish is trying to get these channels as well. It might take a while, but sooner or later we can get Star channels through Dish. How cool would that be?:hyper:
Cable seems to be very expensive over there…
yeah. I think its more expensive than in India
But then we don’t have any option:roll: There are not too many choices to choose from. So..”beggars can’t be choosers” and obviously, its hard to live without cable at home:???:
I was just excited by the fact that STAR will be available here in the US. But all this changing procedure is way too hectic.
Star One is available there that?s great news? I think u should go for it I can vouch for it:grin: it got some really cool programming? and new out of box serials and all.. its becoming one of my favorite channel?
And star plus I was frustrated as mom keep watching those ekta kappor serials.. all those saas kahu .. melodrama.. etc etc
I remember zee was most watched some 7-8 year ago? in my house.. coz it was the only one? but now hardly.. anyone watch that ?.
btw do u get AXN ? even that one of favorite?.channel.. good programing
Actually, we r in a ditto situation Poonam :p
Dishnetwork n Direct TV both have Zee, Sony, B4U, Zee Cinema, SET, TV Asia & a few South Indian channels, so I hope Dishnetwork will get Star channels sooner or later :)
That’s really bad
Cable tv is always very expensive. I wish I could get Indian channels in Indonesia, no cable tv network in here which actually offers it
Talking about cable tv, it reminds me when I was India. I amazed with the cable tv in there. They have a lot of channels and the best part, in every area, even in Shimla which mountain areas, they have the full channels. Unbelieveable !!! Double thumb ups for the Indian cable tv
110 bucks… these american companies are chors!!
Here in India, we just pay about 300 per month and get almost 60 channels, of which atleast 20 are watchable types.
I hope these things don’t get started in India as well.
Hmm..I think there is a bit confusion on one end..I don’t know if its me or you guys..but Dish Network and DirecTV cannot both be showing the same channels…:eyebrow:

In fact the case scenario is this that Dish Network has Zee TV, SET, SET MAX, TV Asia, Zee Cinema, and B4U. DirecTV, their competitor, is now offering Star Plus, Star One, and Star News only. It is not possible for Dish Network, at anytime, be able to show Star Plus and those channels, unless DirecTV ends their contract with Star. Does that make sense?
If anyone remembers, and maybe this is before your time, DirecTV was the first to show Hindi channels and that was Sony. But it didn’t do well at all so they dropped it all together. Then Dish Network picked up Zee TV and at that time, Zee Gold, and it was doing awesome. Soon they picked up Sony as well. Now that DirecTV has seen that Dish is doing so well in the South Asian market, they want to join in on the fun so that’s why they have signed this contract with Star channels.
Another thing I wanted to clear, satellite dish and cable TV are two different things. If I wanted to have English channels on the satellite dish provided by DirecTV or Dish Network, it would cost me around $36 per month for 125 English channels. For cable TV, from a local provider, I am getting 75 channels for about $25. I hope that also makes sense.
Hmm, TV. Arre yaar, yahaan pe we hardly get any thing. If at all we do, its very expensive to get the decoder. :( Anyways, in US at least you get some. And they are cheaper than here. So go for them. And dont compare US with what cable ppl offer in India. ;)
