“Driving Strategies” Written By One Great Driver

Posted on February 25th, 2005 by Poonam

If in case you don’t know who that one great driver is, read on.

In India, you can drive @ 100 mph on the highway and not worry about getting caught by the police. By chance if you do get caught, you give them some $$ and you are off scot free.

In Germany, you can drive @ 100 mph on the highway (what a rush! ) and not worry about getting caught by the police because everyone is going so fast. Going 100 mph in a 55 mph zone is child’s play for them.

In USA, if you even think about driving @ 100 mph on the highway, the police will stop you and give you a ticket. By chance you forget and think that this is India and give the police some $$, he will give you some jail time.

Think before you drive.

My strategy when driving in the USA, if you follow with the traffic (a.k.a one other car  ) the cop can’t stop you because there are now more than one car going the same speed. So what I do is on the highway I spot the car that is going the speed I want to go, usually 80 mph (the limit is 65 mph). Then I follow that car until he/she gets off the highway, and then I find another car. I never pass the car, just stay close enough distance that if there is a cop, he/she will get caught before I will.

Smart eh? Yes, I am one great driver!

Poonam, believe me…most of the people follow that strategy here in US:yes:. The problem is that even the cops have now gotten aware of this, and they have a found ways to stop this:banghead:. I am sure it has happened with many people, but I have a friend who did the same thing (was following a car going faster - was on the left most lane), and boom…the cop turned on his lights and pulled him over :faint:(he actually just moved to the right lane thinking that the cop wants to pull over the car in front of him)…but no, it was him. Huh?? He tried to act smart and asked the cop why he didn’t pull the the other car aside, since that car was going faster:roll:? The cop was maybe in the good mood, because he said “he was going too fast…I would have missed him”)! Well, my friend didn’t get a ticket…but was let free with a mere warning.
So the lesson of the story is…it’s better to be safe than sorry!

  2. Poonam Says:
Hmm…that’s interesting Mannat..must also depend by state as well. I know that I follow close enough to the car in front of me…staying usually in the right lane..that it would be difficult for the cop to give me the answer that the car in front of me was going too fast. I have also seen..not with me..but with other cars that are doing very similar to what I do and the first car always gets caught. It makes sense because your argument..whether you take it to court or not will be that you were traveling with the flow of traffic. Its hard to justify that you are not. But yes, better to be safe than sorry….i usually stay around my 72-75 mph on the highway..unless if i am in a major hurry to get home.

    :rotfl: mahaan hai! :rotfl:

  4. Ankur Raheja Says:

In India, more $$ is accepted. As the Police get some commission on the fines imposed… so now they are more interested in imposing unnecessary fines.

For example: Under Motor Vehicles Act, they can impose additional fine of Rs 1,000, if the act caused danger to public life. So they impose Rs 1,100/- instead of 100/- for jumping a red light :irked:

    I have experienced it

  5. abhi Says:

By chance if you do get caught, you give them some $$ and you are off scot free.

    Its actually *rokra, rokra* ;)

  6. Gaurav Says:

I don’t agree wid dis stratergy, if I was to follow it, to california ke cops will gimme 100’s of tickets.

The safest strat is to be in b/w of 2 or more than 2 cars.

Say if 5 cars going @ 85 mph the cops will defy pull over the last person but sometimes they speed up and catch the first one in the row.

If you can constantly look thru ur rear view mirror and look fwd u can even drive @ 100 mph.

Never give rokra to a cop, just give them money for either “chai pani” or “bachchon ke liye mithai.” This removes the guilt from the policeman’s mind and gives u peace of mind that u helped some guy wid chai-pani or helped his kids wid sweets ;)

  7. Gaurav Says:

@ Mannat :O ur frnd didn’t get a ticket, wot state is it. Here in cali (bay area) my dad got a ticket for driving @ 38 mph where speed limit was 35 mph :|

  8. Neeraj Says:
I agree with you Poonam but I think that 100mph is about 150 kmph and that’s I guess impossible to achieve in India because of the roads:smile: and I think in India there is no problem in going as fast as you want, but sochna padta hai kee kahin oopar nahi pahuch jaaye:smile: other wise no fear about anything:smile:

In Germany, on highways 150 mph(225 kmph) is very normal speed, and when I was there, I never found any one to be caught by cops because of speed limit and the same I heard from all the people over there. It’s really cool over there.

In the US, the rule is not bad, in fact its really good to follow the rule. It’s for our safety only.
I have heard about so many accidents that occur because of high speed and insensible driving. So it ’s good for you( and ofcourse for me too:smile:)to follow this rule of speed. Just have sensible driving:smile:
Sunaaya naa maine lecture, aaya mazza??:rotfl:

  9. Mannat Says:

The state was FL. I guess the cop was having a good day, and so he let go…otherwise, I know, that rarely happens:no:

  10. Tanya Says:

    Hi.

I’m visiting your site for the first time. Must say, its very good. Read your’s and Neeraj’s story - was really taken by surprize, that one can find his/her loved ones through internet as well. Great. Wishing you both all the very best. :)

Driving wala funda is cool. Haha.. :) India mein to aise koi funde ki zaroorat nahin hai. Just pay some cash to cops.. and both ( u and cop) will be happy :)

    Bbye,
    Tanya

  11. Mona Says:

hhahahaha :rotfl: that’s really funny and you are really smart ! I will think whether I should do the same like you do

Today I feel really down about my work, but reading your funny posting today, make me feel a bit better :eyebrow: Have a nice day …

  13. shradha Says:

tailgating … phir driving mein se mazaa gayab ho jayega … :duck:

  14. priya Says:

Thats exactly what I do…be safe also and speed up also…reminds me of this once when i was driving to NJ and tailgating this car at a speed of 95 on 65,and saw a cop car turn on his headlights and follow me and then go past me and turn on his horrifying lights behind the car I was tailgating….sigh of relief it was…

  15. Praveen Says:

    Fellow driver,
You are breaking the law. Please do’nt do it:no:. Its dangerous and will cause accidents. Its not funny and definitely not a fun. You are sharing the public highways with people driving with babies, kids and old people. Its also your moral responsibilty to drive safe for their safety. Thats a strategy you, I and everybody should have.

Few months back my wonderful wife and my cute 3 years :duck:little girl were in an car accident. And when I reached the accident place, they held me so tight we were all trembling…Both were in trauma:shock:. Until today, when I drive with her. She tells me almost everyday, how mama had an accident..she loves both mama and daddy very much. And, I always want to be mama and daddy …. The anxiety is implanted in her memory forever.

The guy who hit was driving a sports car…

BTW, In last 10 year I do not have a single ticket. :wink:And yes I used to hit 100 before marriage…

Do what is right. What others are driving or doing is immaterial. Please drive safe and spread the good word:yes:.. Will you?

If you want to drive to hell, go for it…spare the rest of the world.:irked:

  16. Poonam Says:
Thank you Rashu dear, woh toh main hoon hi.

That’s interesting Ankur, I didn’t know that police had quotas for fines. Sorry to hear that you had to find out the hard way.

    Very true Abhi.

As I said before Gaurav, it depends on the state. I know that its very possible in IL, because I done it. Sometimes you are not able to find two cars hence if I was in that situation and in CA, I would go the speed limit or 70 mph. But otherwise, that’s my strategy and I have been quite successful and safe with it.

Yes Neeru dear you make a good point, but actually the speed does not matter, as we had discussed on the phone . 100 mph was just arbitrary. But yes, what you are said about USA is correct that we should be safe, for both of us, and usually I follow this strategy only when I am in a hurry. I will be careful and safe. I have a limit, and I won’t cross it.

Thanks for coming to our site Tanya. Maine tere baare main bahut kuch sunna hai Manpreet se. Glad to see that you hopped to our site as well. Aati rehna. Yup sahi hai India main toh chalta hai driving ke baare main.

Aaww Mona.. I am sorry that you are down because of your work…I really do hope that it gets better for you soon. But I am happy that I was able to make your day a bit better. Take care!!

Thanks for your comment V. I went to your website today and saw what you wrote about me. Thanks we really appreciate your nice words. Have been quite busy and not been able to check mail but will send you the email with the ID/password if you also send a picture of you and “Ji”.

Unfortunately Shradha, kabhi kabaar mere se tailgating bhi ho jaata hai :duck: especially jab left lane main koi slow jaa raha ho..aur usko pass nahi kar sakhu..phir tailgate karna hi padta hai.

My god Priya, I would have been freaked out as well. That has never happend to me where the police put on the lights and then got someone else but I have had it where the police was behind me, then I went to the right lane, and then he kept going on forward. I kept on thinking that he was going to get me.

First of all Praveen, I am sorry what happened with your family and that driver. Second, I think its necessary to be safe always when driving, which I am. I also think that its not wrong or unsafe to follow another car if you are following at a good distance and not causing any troubles in traffic. The whole main point is that you should always be in control of your vehicle. If you are able to do that then there should really be no problem. Safety is key, and I am always safe while driving.

  17. Deepak Jeswal Says:
