Zee Cine Awards Do It Democratically
After a discussion with Neeraj this morning about India having only one filmi awards, I still went ahead and watched the glamourous Zee Cine Awards, hosted in London, for four hours.
Four hours? Yes. Four hours.
Was it better than the Filmfare Awards? I might say that last year they topped Filmfare, hands down. This year the glamour was still there, but the punch wasn’t as good. Filmfare had some great performances; Zee Cine were just mediocre. Shah Rukh and Preity performed quite well in both with Filmfare having the great actresses of yesteryear perform as well with them where Zee Cine had the joint performance on the latter part of their sequence with the Pakistani actor and actress on Aisa Des Hai Mera. Both performances were too good to judge which was better.
Akshay Kumar did a great job on his performace where the actress with him, Mallika Sherawat, was just ok.
Salman Khan was just ok as well, not mind blowing as before. Did anyone else think he was wearing a wig?
Aishwarya Rai did a great job with her performance dedicating A.R. Rahman’s music.
Last year’s Master of Ceremonies (MC) were Karan Johar and Juhi Chawla. They were too good last year and topped it this year. It was really fun watching them and when they were off the stage, you were hoping that they would come back soon.
Juhi sang once more this year and my goodness, she can definitely pick it up as a second career.
Lara Dutta and John Abraham rounded it off with the MCs, and they also were bearable.
The awards. Zee Cine Awards claims to be the only democratic award ceremony that the industry has as they let the people choose who should be the winner. Best Director went to Yash Chopra for Veer Zaara, Best Song went to Dhoom Machale from Dhoom (which I might add was well deserved
), Best Actor went to SRK for Veer Zaara, Rani Mukherjee beat out Preity Zinta with her magnificent performance in Hum Tum, and the Best Film went to Veer Zaara.
Funny and boring segments. First boring. That award would have to go to Omar Sharif who might have dazzled the audience for the first 15 minutes with his jokes, but the last 30 were just plain boring.
The funny segment was when Sajid Khan was up on stage giving away awards for Best Actor in Comic Role, Best Actor in a Negative Role, & Best Supporting Actor/Actress. He had a video clip which showed some of the nominees sugar coating their competitors saying that the other person would win, and later once the winner would be announced, they would show their aslee roop (real image).
It was all an act and all was in fun but quite funny.
Great going Sajid!
The Best Lyricist was no surprise and went to Javed Akhter. Best Music Director was Anu Malik for Main Hoon Na, Best Playback Singer Male went to Kunal Ganjawala for Murder, and Best Playback Singer Female went to Sunidhi Chauhan for Dhoom Machale from Dhoom.
There it is in a nutshell. Where they better than Filmfare? Finally it can be said that both award shows were decent this year.
Alvida. Jai Mata Di.

lovely webpage Poonam … keep up the good work !!
March 28th, 2005 at 1:42 am
o i thot the awards were pretty boring… yeah they def lacked the punch !!!
n tooo many awards happn… so kinda gets lousy when the last one happns…
March 28th, 2005 at 2:36 am
I agree with u Poonam, the awards were kinda ok.
I have to say this: Omar Sharif started very good, as mentioned by Poonam, the dog jokes were really good :)) ….but from there it wasn’t funny. The joke that females don’t die, joke on Adnan Sami, other jokes were not funny
Even the stars were giving “Yeh Kya Horaha Hai” looks. I agree that he was a guest from Pakistan but I still feel that he should have had only performed and not hosted the show.
-+- Zee TV got a New Logo -+-
The old logo was 2 obsolete. It appeared that it was created from a DOS comp.

I think, there should be just one award show in a year
March 28th, 2005 at 6:53 am
No award for “Swades??”. This is too bad.
That film really deserved some awards. Especially for the music.
Anyways, aisa bhi hota hai. :)
March 28th, 2005 at 7:39 am
I didn’t read your whole post yet coz’ I missed the awards yesterday and got them recorded. So will watch them tonight.
I watched till Dharmendra got the award for ‘Lifetime achievement’. You are right Omar Sharif was not funny this time. I loved him in Dubai where he performed with Shekhar Suman in last yrs Zee Cine Awards. But I really like Akshay’s performance. I loved how he made the whole crwon participate and I loved the songs he danced on. But didn’t like Mallika Sherawat - well I guess she hardly did anything:rotfl:

Govind - Swades got 3 awards
Zee Cine Best Lyricist: Javed Akhtar (Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera)
Zee Cine Most Promising newcomer: Gayatri Joshi
Critics Director of the year: Ashutosh Gowariker
but MHN music shudn’t have got dat award. Gayatri wasn’t even a nominee for the debutant award @ filmfare.

maine toh nahi dekha… but Veer Zaara as such was not a great movie man… itne saare awards kyun?!?!? I agree ki the theme was really nice and I definitely admire these guys for changing the trend( from paki-bashing to paki-phylic{lol… don’t think anyone had ever used to this term!!). But I do think that Swades was much much better… or maybe just mere dil ko jyaada chu gaya :)
March 28th, 2005 at 7:03 pm
Yep Kunal, the punch was not there.
This is only the second awards show that I have seen.
Haven’t been overburdened yet.
The new logo is quite nice Gaurav.
Omar Sharif was a waste. Even Sajid Khan said that Omar Sharif talked for too long.
Which awards show would you want it to be Ankur?
Swades did win Govind as Gaurav stated later in the comments.
Gayatri Joshi won for Best Debut, Javed Akhter won for Best Lyricist, and Ashutosh Gowariker won for Best Directors (Critics Choice).
Akshay was pretty good this year Mannat. Its a good thing that Dharmendra didn’t talk forever and ever but I thought he got the Liftetime Achievement Award last year…why did he get it again this year?
Omar Sharif was a waste.
Very funny Neeru.
You know that you are my Abhishek.
If I would have seen you then my day would have been a perfect day.
I don’t know if I agree Gaurav. Main Hoon Na had great songs. I don’t know if you would say that it was better than Swades or Veer Zaara but all of the songs were good for the movie plus they attracted to all of the masses, not just one group.
I haven’t seen Veer Zaara Rashu, so I can’t comment on how the movie is but it did well at Zee Cine and Filmfare. The music was great.

Happy belated Holi *hugsss* I am so sorry that I disappear for these few days because of the training
The training so far is very fun because I meet a lot of people from different offices. Just feel a bit tired because the tasks are very packed.
I think Zee and Filmfare awards are really good … as long as I can see my favourite stars performed, I am more than happy
Lara and John somehow are very good as a couple, I think they have very good chemistry. I can’t wait to watch the movie where they are a couple again
March 28th, 2005 at 9:47 pm
Cool! these awards shows are very nice time-pass! seems like the zee event was a lot of fun. Apart from the fact that I hate Karan Johar :P…sounds like the show went off very well!
March 28th, 2005 at 10:16 pm
I loved when Sajid was on stage. Also, the dubbing that Juhi & Karan did over the best film’s category was hilarious:rotfl:
One thing that I couldn’t believe is that Veer Zaara’s music was not even nominated for the ‘best music’. Now c’mon - I thought that was the best music of 2004…atleast nomination tou hona hi chahiye tha:irked:
March 29th, 2005 at 3:59 am
Hello,there,Poonam..Sigh..I missed watching the awards live. Will wait for the repeat telecast/the DVD,now..very nice description from you.:)
March 29th, 2005 at 3:59 am
I meant, there must be just one Bollywood awards, as otherwise it becomes too confusing
March 29th, 2005 at 5:58 am
Frankly speaking, awards don’t interest me now!! There was a time when I used to wait for Filmfare awards!! But, now every T,D & H has a award show of their own… so it has become more of a routine thing.. nothing new!!
Moreover, sometimes these awards seem to be rigged.. like there was no award for Swades.. I think it was one of the finest piece of art coming out of Indian Film Industry… !! And, anu malik getting best music director award and that too for Main Hoon Na! gimme a break… Was its music better than Swades, Hum Tum, Veer-zaara, Murder, and even Dhoom… no way!!
March 29th, 2005 at 6:00 am
Oh… i read comments of other people only after writing my own .. hehe.. so didn’t noticed that Swades did win award… but I guess.. only the fringe awards… main awards were given to other movies..!!
March 29th, 2005 at 5:27 pm
John and Lara eh? Didn’t really notice them but whatever it is, I bet that Bipasha isn’t happy about it.
Good timepass is right Ashwin!
Why don’t you like Karan Johar?
I think he is funny and smart. I would love to knwo what you think.
Juhi and Karan, in general, were hilarious Mannat but the bit that you discuss was really funny.
I agree with you with Veer Zaara not being nominated, hona toh chaiye tha.
Thanks Amit. Do watch it.
Which awards would you think Bollywood should have if they had to choose one Ankur? Zee, Filmfare, Samsung?
Took me a while to understand what T D & H meant Manpreet, but now I know (for those who don’t its Tom Dick and Harry
). Anyway, I feel the same that there was a time I would wait for the awards but now if I miss it, it doesn’t really bother me. Priorities change with time changing.
I don’t totally agree with what you said about Main Hoon Na getting the award for best music. I think the whole music album/compliation should be looked at and seen if all the songs were good. MNH I think fit the bill quite well, even though I hate Anu Malik, he did a good job with the music. Swades had great songs but can you listen to the whole album every time you pop in that CD? Hmm..I can’t but I could do that with MNH (and I used to when it was out) and I also could do it with Veer Zaara. So in my point of view, MNH and Veer Zaara were both well deserving for the award.
I also don’t think that the awards are rigged at all this year. It seemed that those that deserved it, got the award. It fit just like who I had picked for the winners. So it was pretty good. I don’t know if Ritesh Deshmukh deserved the Comic Role for Masti but then again i haven’t seen the whole movie.
March 30th, 2005 at 2:38 am
I still say MHN wasn’t a right contender
HT had songs for ppl of all ages - U n I se leke Sanson…. VZ too had slow #s and the Aaya Tere Dar Par as a fast track. {Rant} If SRK wasn’t in MHN it would have been a flop - avg. movie. What kind of story was it. {/Rant(for now)}
I believe Saif should have been nominated as Best Actor in place of Shahrukh for MHN.
I don’t know if Ritesh Deshmukh deserved the Comic Role for Masti but then again i haven’t seen the whole movie.
Actually he didn’t. Vivek, Aftab n Ritesh share almost equal amount of credit. Once again Saif for HT or Akshay for MSK should have had won that award.
BTW did u guys get a chance to watch Socha Na Tha? I have seen about ½ of the movie and so far it seems like a really cool movie. Am gonna watch the whole thing rt. now!
March 30th, 2005 at 5:52 am
It would hard to say if MNH or Veer Zaara should have won.
It doesn’t matter if SRK was in MNH or not. That’s irrelevant to the discussion on music.
Saif was good in Hum Tum and he should have been nominated. It still wouldn’t have mattered because he wouldn’t have won. SRK’s role in Veer Zaara was much more powerful.
Agree abt. Ritesh Deshmukh. Akshay Kumar should have gotten it.
Nope on Socha Na Tha. Hum log aaisi faltu faltu movies main time waste nahi karte.
:rotfl:
March 30th, 2005 at 7:36 am
Even me thinks that MHN was not a worth contender for the best music album award…
I will opt for Hum Tum , Swades or VZ anyday!!
March 30th, 2005 at 7:41 am
March 30th, 2005 at 8:10 am
Argument is… that i don’t like MNH music at all !! And, I’m not alone.. there are many who don’t like it!! For eg. Gaurav
March 30th, 2005 at 8:23 am
i don’t think it has to do anything with it being Farah Khan’s movie or SRK being in the movie or that the music was Anu Malik’s for MNH. Even though I wasn’t the biggest fan of the music, it was hummable and the whole album can be considered best music of the year. It was a huge hit in India and abroad.
Again soch soch ki baat hai.
btw what you said is not an argument, that is just a statement with no support.
Which leaves your argument to be…. irrelevant.
March 30th, 2005 at 8:28 am
Dhoom had great music… and it appealed to the masses too.. almost all the songs were good… better than MNH… anyway.. why debate on this petty issue :P
Going offtopic… song of the year for me was Bullah ki jaane…!! Suna ya nahin abhi tak?
March 30th, 2005 at 8:31 am
Poonam…I don’t agree with you. I don’t think MHN’s should have won the award. I just still can’t believe that they didn’t even nominate VZ for that category…whereas I was thinking that it should WIN-end of it!
I do however think that MHN’s music was better than Swades’s and Hum Tum.
March 30th, 2005 at 8:33 am
Veer Zaara did that. Did it do it better than MNH? Possible. But no other movie’s full album was comparable to either of those two movies.
Kabhi kabhi apni soch ko hataa ke poora junta ki soch dekhni padti hai.
No yaar.. I haven’t had a chance to listen to that song..but I will..Rabbi Shergill. I will listen on Raaga or somewhere tonight after office amongst the 100 other things that I have to do tonight.
March 30th, 2005 at 8:35 am
I have said that Veer Zaara was as deserving but we can’t argue about that because it wasn’t nominated.
So it seems that you do agree with me, right Mannat?
March 30th, 2005 at 8:40 am
So, that means nominations were rigged
March 30th, 2005 at 8:42 am
nothing was rigged.
March 30th, 2005 at 8:44 am
Arre bade bade deshon mein aisi choti choti batein hoti rehti hain… nothing new

yes, Poonam…I agree with you…
But I also agree with Manpreet..
hmm…I am getting good at giving ‘politically correct answers’:eyebrow:
But hey…do listen to ‘Bulla Ke Jaane’…
Manpreet I watched the video…nice one…
