Aish on Oprah

After coming on 60 minutes and the David Letterman Show in the past months, Aishwarya Rai was on another big US talk show’s guestlist yesterday, the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Thanks to Papa for telling me about it, otherwise I would have surely missed the 10 minutes that she was on the show. Yes. 10 minutes only. Oprah was doing a special on women around the world and hence brought on her first guest, Aishwarya Rai, Bollywood’s rani.

Anyway, here’s a pic that shows the glamourous Aishwarya Rai on the show. She had presented Oprah with a sari and then was requested by Oprah to help her wear it. Pretty good for a person who had never helped anyone else wear a sari.

Aishwarya on the Oprah Winfrey Show

My biggest complaint: why didn’t you wear traditional Indian clothes??? After two major appearances on other shows, you should have definitely worn something more traditional on Oprah. Aishwarya does mention how she loves wearing saris, and I think she looks good in them too. I don’t know who made the decision on her clothes — but it wasn’t a good one.

Same questions were repeated from before — talk about arranged marriages, what Indian women think about American women, living with her parents @ her age, and the list goes on. Being an Indian woman and hearing Oprah say that Aishwarya is the representative for Indian women, I began to watch her answers even closely.

Example: Oprah had asked Aishwarya if Indian women thought American women were rude. Her answer was that Indian people are very hospitable. Hmm…did she not understand the question?

After thinking about who else might be a good representative of Indian women, (women like Mallika Sherawat, Amrita Arora, Mallika Arora Khan, and Payal Rathogi went through the mind) I think Aishwarya is the best choice. There really isn’t a better women in today’s youth of India that would be better than her. I think she has definitely gotten better as the interviews have passed.

You can catch a glimpse of the video on Oprah’s website.

    Hey Poonam…welcome back!!!
So you liked Aishwarya on Oprah???
I agree, she should have definitely worn Indian dress. I don’t know why does she always have to present herself in western clothes! She is representing India here, and nothing about her says that.
Anyways, as far as the other choices for who could represent India abroad, I think Sushmita Sen would be the perfect choice. She knows how to talk and how to answer the questions. I think she is a perfect example of a ‘lady with beauty & brains’.

  2. Poonam says:

    Thanks Mannat.

I think that Aish did better on Oprah than the other two interviews. She can always improve.

You make a very good point about Sushmita. She would definitely be another good representative — I didn’t really think about her. You know after seeing her performance in Bewafaa I have to say that I was impressed. She was there for a small time but her stature and her personality is just breathtaking.

I don’t know why she never got the prestige that she deserves. Neeraj really likes her acting and now even I am beginning to like it.

    Good point!

  3. Ankur Raheja says:

    Interesting:!:
Right Mannat, Sushmita Sen will be a better choice.

  4. Govind says:

Yeah, Sush would have been a better choice!!.

Iska matlab, aish is all beauty, and no brains!!.

  5. Poonam says:

Yep yep Ankur and Govind. Sushmita is definitely a better choice.

  6. kaush says:

I love Sush over Ash anyday. I think Ash is a little too overzealous and too “giggly”. I think Sush can win over Ash in class and style anyday!
However, I think Aishwarya answered Oprah’s question correctly. When Oprah asked “Do they think we’re rude” And she replied No, Indian people are very hospitable. I think she meant that Indian people are very hospitable and do not consider or think other people as rude.
i dont know..this was my interpretation of her answer when i read it. Do I make sense?
By the way , how have you been? I never got a chance to look at the secret plan’? Password hai..bhejonaa would love to read it…I have just been a little busy with work too.. talk to you soon.

  7. Poonam says:

Arre kya baat hai Kaush dear..main tere baare main hi soch rahi thi… aur dekh tu aa gayi.

I think that you are right that Aish is a bit overzealous. Her background is nice though..to see that an indian girl, even after so much fame and fortune, is staying with her parents. Sushmita’s background is also quite different where she adopted a girl and is a single mom. If you think it in this aspect, then maybe Aish would be a better representative of Indian women because of her background. What do you say?

Thoda unbusy ho naa.. Will send you the protected post pwd.

  8. PRIYA says:

sabse pehle-aise posts ek din pehle hone chaheeyen taaki mere jaise ignorant log dekh saken…and secondlt tank u for all the info cos ofcourse i missed it…
aish certainly looks gorgeous in indian outfits…like in hum dil de chuke sanam…

  9. Poonam says:

Arre Priya dear..agli baar dhyaan rakhongi. Actually even I found out just a few mins before the show otherwise I would definitely have posted. But I think u should be able to watch the video on Oprah’s site. Do check it out.

  10. Sushubh says:

i personally think she is a disgrace to india… but than it is me the weirdo…

  11. Poonam says:

Interesting Sushubh. Care to elaborate….

  12. Mona says:

Although I am not fan of Ash  but I think she is really cool … she really makes her way to Hollywood which is good because she can introduce more about India to the world :hyper: Yeah … agree with you Poonam … she should wear saree … because it’s more beautiful

  13. rash says:

I definitely do like Sush… I don’t really know who I like over the other, but Sush seems to be giggling away to glory like Ash as well!!… Atleast thats how she was on Koffee with Karan.

  14. AmitL says:

Hi,Poonam,Wow..Aish actually appeared on the Oprah show? Will check out the video later in the day. Thanks for the info. And,Oprah in a saree looks pretty, well, unusual.

  15. Manpreet says:

Even I don’t like Aish very much… just couple of okie-dokey movies and a ms. world title doesn’t makes one representative of Indian women!!

And agree with you all, Sush is better than Aish any day!!

  16. Prasad says:

wow… reading all the comments over here…. I was jus thinking abt a good representative for India.. And I agree as most ppl said, Aish is a real beauty… no denial in it.. I read the news article abt Oprah’s show in Rediff and the first photo in that article was really stunning… But, comparing Sush and Aish on the other part I mean the brains part, Sush will beah Aish hands down.. Not only that, her overall personality is really great… :)
But, jus one negative with Sush…. which is too much of a negative that makes me think Aish is better representative than Sush.. The fact tht she is tooo much westernised… As rash said here abt Koffee With Karan show, I did saw that where Sush and Sanjay Dutt were present.. She was really giggling and her talks were not like what an Indian woman would say.. she was going way overboard….
So, guess Aish is better in that aspect…
Oh.. i’ve started writing an essay on who is the best… :banghead:
    I will(no.. should) stop here…

  17. Kunal says:

aish is tooo plastic ! while u can feel the warmth n sincerity when u hear sush talk… mayb not always…

  18. Poonam says:

Good to see you Mona dear after such a long hiatus. How have you been? What are you up to these days? Your blog is quite bare  …. hope to see a new post there soon. You got it — saree all the way for Aish!

When did you see Koffee with Karan Rashu dear??? Aaj kal main dekha?? PC par hai kya? Mere ko file bhejna if tere paas ho.

Very good point Prasad abt. Sushmita. Even I agree on the part that she is a bit more westernized. What else I think is that her background. Like I mentioned before, I think her background of having an adopted child and being a single parent would not be the best representation of Indian women because the typical Indian is not in that situation. Anyway, good thoughts!

Too plastic eh Kunal? Point taken. Sometimes she does sound like a barbie.

  19. Gaurav says:

Was a fan of Aish but no more.

I am not sure if Aish will be a better representative or sush. Coz as Poonam said, Indian women r not single parents generally, but neither most of the Indian women are single till the age of 32.

I regard Sushmita for adopting rene (sp?) coz the models say several things during the beatuy pageant QA but never really do what they say. I think Sushmita has set a very good example. I think Aishwarya is after money and fame, thats it. I agree that she is beautiful but why does she have to fake the American accent? You are interviewed as an Indian, so why not speak like you speak everyday?

I watched Big B’s interview on Charlie Rose show @ KQED. It was atleast 30 minutes long and was very interesting. He talked in the same accent as he talks with Indian media. He spoke about India’s shortcomings (illitracy n stuff) and the new emerging india. He talked about how Indian middle class doesn’t believe in it and they have to change their views towards the country. He also told America that India makes 1000 movies per yr. and Indian Cinema has a viewership of 3.8 billion ppl worldwide as compared to 3.2 billion viewers of Hollywood. He also spoke about his dislike towards the term “Bollywood” as it has been derived by some “smart journalists” from the word Hollywood.

On the other hand Aishwarya Rai gave a false impression of India being the “Land of Kamasutra”…..I think she should know that that they r just available at chemist shops and thats it.

    -=- rest later -=-

  20. Poonam says:

You make some good points Gaurav. I wanted to watch the interview with Amitabh but didn’t get a chance to because I didn’t know when it was on. Great recap! Its good to see the genuinity of Amitabh. I would have to say that sometimes Aish says what people want to hear…regarding the Kamasutra. People know that India is the land of Kamasutra..and in the Oprah interview she came off saying what people wanted to hear which in fact is not truly showing who you are or what Indians are. On the accent, I don’t know what she is trying to do..if she is just trying to relate to the American people or just again trying to be someone she really isn’t. I think slowly she is getting a big head..and its going to explode one of these days!

  21. Gaurav says:

    lol I am on a posting spree…. :P

Actually I didn’t know about the AB interview. It was 12:30 – 1:00 at night and I was flipping channels and suddenly saw a scene from Don on KQED…..it was purely accidental :P

  22. Poonam says:

    Post away Gaurav.

Oh really?? My papa was telling me about it that he had seen the last few mins of it..but will see on the net..definitely the video is out there somewhere.
