Password Protect Blog?

Posted on April 27th, 2005 by Poonam

It seems that this website of ours is jumping up a bit too much when googling. This is a bit of a problem for us because I have too many family members that still don’t know about Neeraj. :faint: The concern is very sincere and something that I would like to do until Neeraj and I get atleast engaged. Promise it will only be temporarily. I do sometimes post things that I really wouldn’t want certain family to know.

So don’t be surprised if the blog becomes password protected — in full. Right now I have the index.html page being redirected to /wp but I think I might just do something like Govind has and make my index.html as a intro/login page. Still not having good luck on finding a good plugin or php script for the password protection. Surely I will try to make it as easy and painless for all of my daily readers.

If anybody has any good ideas do let me know on how I can go about this painlessly. There are some scripts using .htaccess file — but again, I don’t know if I want to play with that file.

I am still debating if I even want to do this, but I can find more reasons on why I should, then why I shouldn’t. Aargh. :irked: Life would be easier if a certain search engine would just not index my site. :irked: Anybody know how to do that???

hmm..that can definitely be discomforting. I think password protecting might be a good idea..though I am sure the web-experts out there will come out with a better solution for you :).

    Ashwin

psst…mere ko us post ka password nahin mila :(

  2. Chetan Says:

Add this in your index.php template page (in the header):

Then create a robots.txt file with this following and upload to the root of your site.

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /

That should take care of Google. Wait for a couple of days and try again, your rank will drop substantially.

  3. Chetan Says:

This in the header (somehow, the comment form gobbled it up):
    <META NAME=”robots” CONTENT=”noarchive,nofollow”>

  4. Puneet Says:

i was goona say the same thing … what chetan mentioned
robots.txt just add code so that ..

you tell the search engine spiders not to crawl your website and it wont be indexed

and you can email Google to remove the cache of pages already indexed

  5. Manpreet Says:

arrey dude, try implementing chetan’s code.. !!

If it doesn’t work, then maybe you can password protect your blog… and yup.. do let me know the password :)

  6. Govind Says:

Hmm, may be trying out robots text might help. But remember, so many of us pointing to your site. Which is also one of the criteria for pageranking. Anyways, try it out.

Am not sure about Putting up password. Anyways, try out. :)

  7. Prasad Says:

Oh, thts certainly a big concern… do come up with an alternative soon.. and let us all know the pwds if it becomes pwd protected..

  8. mannat Says:

hmm….password protected website?? That should be good. But I am sure the computer geeks would have ways to crack the password and get into it anyways…
I think creating a robots.text file would be your best option!

  9. Ankur Raheja Says:

Whatever you decide… please email us the password :!:

  10. Manish Says:

hmmmm… all guys are fundo.. mere ko to kuch bhi gyan nahi hai websites ka .. jaada kaam nahi kara uspar.. na hi interest liya.. :) anyways Poonam.. send me the password if u make it password protected ..and if you dont mind sharing can i see your “Our Photos” section of yours ..

  11. Sushubh Says:

the simplest way is to use hta based password protection…

both cpanel (which i think is what ur server is powered by) and directadmin (which i like) offer inbuilt feature to use it.

find ‘Password Protect Directories’ in cpanel backend and protect the folder wp…

  12. Poonam Says:
Thanks Ashwin. I am sending you the password right now. Got a little sidetracked, sorry.

Thanks for the code Chetan. Am still going to try to implement it.

Thanks for the idea Puneet — will try it tomorrow.

Yep will do Manpreet. Right now I got this script that does what I want and will be painless for you all. Let me know what you think.

I have decided Govind that its more Yahoo than Google that is causing me trouble. Yahoo is indexing my page like crazy. How would my adding the code affect your website? I know it has to do with pagerank if you could you elaborate that would be great.

The alternative is in Prasad. Let me know if you have any troubles.

Its more my family that I am worried about than the computer geeks Mannat. If my cousins find out and tell their parents then it will be a big mausibat for my parents. You know what I mean? Its temporary until atleast Neeraj and I get engaged.

You can make your own login id and password Ankur. All we do is approve.

I will send you the password for that Manish. Do leave your website on the website textbox so that I can refer back to your site. Do update it as well!

Thanks for your help during the installation of the script Sushubh. Appreciate it. I have used the Web Protect in the cpanel for the Our Photos link. But i just didn’t want to give out a generic user id and password for the site. This is better where people can make their own id and password and all we have to do is approve. Thanks for the suggestion!

  13. Manpreet Says:

Since you whole site is protected now… I don’t think you need a password protected gallery now!!

  14. Govind Says:

You did nt got my point, as many of us pointing to your site. Google thinks that your site is good. And when its crawler came across ur site and sees, so many posts. As you have 200 plus. Its a lot of content for them. So they start indexing it.

And Google’s algorithm decides pagerank on the base of number of sites pointing to a particular site. The more number of sites point to a site, the more will be the pagerank. I think, this is one of the criteria. Anyways, read more here.

    http://pr.efactory.de/

I think, this is the technique followed by other search engines as well. Yahoo is looking more like Google now. Check with yahoo site, there might be possibility to remove ur site from their database like in Google.

  15. Poonam Says:
Good point Manpreet. It will be gone ASAP.

Thanks for the info Govind. i just didn’t know how the pagerank thing worked. Well I haven’t used the robots.txt yet, so what do you think, should I? Will it affect your site? Just let me know your thoughts.

See the best thing about this password protection is that my site is still being indexed but even if you click on it any search engine, you can’t get in. So if any of my family does find it, they can never really know who it is.

  16. Govind Says:

It does nt really matter, when you once set the rules in “robots.txt”. Crawler will automatically remove your site from the database. But it takes time to happen. Probably weeks.

Anyways, password thing is good. But what sites do is they store sites in cache. If someone finds their via Google search. They can still see that page in cache. Which was stored on a previous crawl. Even if they cant enter, they can check the info in cache. Better thing is to go to the site and request for removal of the site. :)

  17. Gaurav Says:

yup, I agree with Govind’s last post….u still need to remove ur site from Google n Yahoo’s db.

    651 pages

  18. Poonam Says:
Well now that its password protected..i really don’t care…but maybe I will do that soon. Thanks for the advice Govind and Gaurav.
