Aamchi Mumbai I

Posted on June 22nd, 2006 by Poonam

I have to keep the story going or I will never finish. So in the story, Lakshmi has gotten married, and on the 2nd of June I have reached Mumbai.

Mumbai is my favorite city in all of India and after a long time, I was going to be in the city during its warmest time of the year. For those of you who may not know, my nani’s(maternal grandmother) house is in Mumbai, and that is where we stay while in Mumbai. With my nani lives my two mamajis, Lalit Mama and Roop Mama, and their families.

As we went this time, our building was being renovated — so lots of workers inside the home and outside trying to get everything done prior to everyone leaving for my marriage in Jaipur. I had a few things in mind while in Mumbai as I needed to get my shopping completed (more clothes), get shopping done for my American friends that were coming (clothes for them to wear during the marriage), get little stuff that maybe needed, see relatives, etc…

Neeraj and I were going to bring our American friends to Mumbai after the marriage too, so I needed to get the hotel reservations done for that too. So I had an agenda during my ten days in the city. All work without any fun is just not me.

My cousins and I roamed around the city, more Churchgate side, as we shopped on our own (Colaba side to get wedding chappals for me) as well as in the suburbs (Andheri East). My cousin in Andheri told us about a new cineplex, Red Lounge, where you can see a movie in luxury. Now what’s luxury? Well these are huge comfy seats that recline, where you can request for a blanket if you are cold, and the waiter comes to your seat to find out if you would like any refreshments. Now that is luxury.

36 China Town - Hindi Movie

So we went to see 36 China Town with my parents, Raju Bhaiya, Alif Bhabhi, and Pooja Didi. The movie was not bad, but the cineplex was awesome:!: Papa even ran into Neetu Singh when he was going to the restroom:!:

You can’t be in Mumbai without having a golgappa once or twice. As Mumma, Papa, and I were in Colaba one night, we stopped by at one of the restaurants that Mumma used to come to when she was a little girl. I had one of the yummiest golgappas ever:!:  Making you hungry???

Mumma’s birthday was on the 9th of May, so we had a great time celebrating with the rest of the family. Heena, my cousin, and I went pretty late to get the chocolate truffle cake from Gaylord. Whooooo that was verryyy yummy. This a food filled post, isn’t it???  It was great that Mumma was able to celebrate her birthday with her Mumma, my nani.

We did a lot of walking as we shopped all over Mumbai and it never fails, I always break one of my sandals while in India, and this time it was in Mumbai. We just left L. Sunderdas Jewellers where we had bought Neeraj’s wedding ring and were on our way to check out the hotel reservation for our American friends when one of my sandals just fell apart. :irked: Now what:?::!::?: I slowly walked with Mumma and Papa and on the corner they spot the guy that fixes shoes (I don’t know what they are called), and boom:!: he fixed my sandal in no time.

Part II next on the list.

Alvida. Jai Mata Di.

Yeah, since the day when netbunch bought mesopia, the service has been very bad! Even, I lost couple of posts in between. There have been frequent downtimes!

If I hadn’t paid for full year in advance, I would have shifted to another host :(

Anyways, coming to your post, you are really making me drool over all that golgappas, choc truffles, etc… I haven’t found a good place to have nice chat/golgappa stuff in Bangalore.

I like the south bombay area, specially the places around Colaba, Marine Drive, Grant Road, Churchgate etc. Looks like you had lots of fun over there!! good! :)

Haven’t been to Red Lounge yet… but in Delhi & Bangalore (now i guess in Mumbai as well), there is this chain of multiplexes known as PVR. They have gold class theatres - where they provide super comfy seats, food etc. But, the ticket costs a bomb - 500 bucks!!

PS: Still no wedding photos yet?
PPS: Hoping this time my comment doesn’t get flagged as spam!!

Good update as usual. Have never been to Mumbai, but one day… Reading about Gol Guppas reminded me of my childhood in India. Those “deluxe” cineplexes sound pretty awesome. Can’t wait for the next post! :)

Same here Manpreet — I have paid for the full year so now I feel that I am stuck. :irked: You know it took them more than 10 hours to respond to my ticket:!: :grumpy: I will not be re-newing my contract with them next year.

South Bombay is awesome:!: Bombay in whole is awesome. I am glad to hear that I have succeeded to make your mouth water. :rotfl:

Red Lounge is great:!: I was really impressed, and for the matinee movie the prices were real nice (i think around Rs. 200-250).

Wedding photos will not be up until my whole story is over on the trip. So sorry, you will have to bear with me.

I didn’t know that you also have Netbunch Kunal. Ya, their customer service sucks:!: :irked: Thanks for the Hindi clarification.

You have to make it over to Mumbai Joy — its a wonderful place and great city overall. Next post coming up soon.

The service by the webhosting company has been horrible Mona. Oh well, I can’t do anything about it now, isn’t that horrible? Mumbai is wonderful — you should also make it over the next time you are in India.
