Time Magazine: India Inc.
Current Tune: Des Rangila - Fanaa
If you haven’t picked up the June 26, 2006 edition of Time magazine then you should go check it out now:!:
As you can see, the cover speaks for itself. Its all about how India is going to become a superpower by 2015. You are going to be impressed by some of the facts and figures they share in the articles that covers everything from India as a whole to Bombay’s boom as well as the world that is known as Bollywood.
Just to give you a flavor of a few things that I thought were interesting:
India’s GDP topped $800 billion in 2005. The economy has grown an average of 8% over the past 3 years A surging stock market has boosted the number of Indian billionaires to 23 - compared with 8 in China Tourism to India has risen about 20% over the past two years. Some 618,000 Americans flocked to India last year, making up nearly 16% of India’s total visitors
India is definitely changing the world, and I surely noticed the changes that were being made in Mumbai, Delhi, and Jaipur. Things are getting cleaner in these big cities and slowly the chaos that used to be seen is getting lesser. Population is still an issue, that is agreeable, but all in all progress is being made.
Check it out — good articles in this week’s Time:!: Back to Part II of Aamchi Mumbai in a day or two.

I’ve had numerous discussions with some friends about India being a super power in another 15-20 years. Yes, last January when I visited India (mostly Punjab & UP), I also noticed a big difference. There were times, when I couldn’t really tell whether I was in North America or India. It was interesting to see the transition India is going through. It has made progress in leaps and bounds. No question! But I also noticed the number of Jhuggies (slums) had increased exponentially, that surrounded most of the major railway stations including Delhi, Amritsar, Ludhiana, etc. One other thing that I noticed was that natural resources like water are getting depleted at a quick rate. Rivers that were still flowing 5 years ago, had mostly become a dry land now. I am primarily talking about Sutluj and Beas in Punjab. While the number of billionaires is on a rise there, the poor are still getting poorer.
I don’t intend to sound like I am an India basher. :) All I am saying is that it is great that India is making this huge progress, it deserves it. But there are certain ground realities that cannot be ignored. It would be interesting to see how this growth in the economy actually reflects in the life of a common man like a rickshaw puller in years to come. And also, how India copes with an increasing population and depleting natural resources, that are needed to sustain it.
