1st Anniversary Party - what a hit!

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

So I am back after a while. Life has been busy :!: India Trip posts are basically done, and now I have other things that I have to share.

You may ask what? Well, the big thing is: two months with the in-laws!!! Yes, Neeraj’s parents stayed with us for the past two months, and it was an enjoyable experience. Definitely we changed our normal way of life and adapted to their way of life, which was fine for us for two months. I can’t say that everything was smooth — it did take us a while to get adjusted, as well for them too, but I can say for sure it was a wonderful experience for all of us.

We tried to take them sight-seeing such as the Gateway of Arch, Meramec Caverns, and our big 12 hour car ride to the Niagara Falls was definitely the highlight. All in all they enjoyed the natural beauty of America the most. The weather was thankfully stayed nice and averagely warm, which made their stay enjoyable.

Current Tune: Mere Haath Mein - Fanaa

I am writing this with a fresh mind today, which is good for me because I think I write the best during those times.

So the morning of the 18th May we reached Neeraj’s home where we got settled. It was already morning, so Neeraj’s sisters were all busy with hosting the guests that were staying with them. We completed the pooja and all that needed to be done in the morning, and Suraj and my cousin Gautam went back to the hotel.

This post is going to revolve around the song that I have added to listen while you read the post. This song is very meaningful to us — because after a long time, we have finally gotten what we have wanted — to be together.

There is a tradition in my family where the newlyweds have the first meal with the bride’s family. We had a late lunch with my family and then we headed back to Neeraj’s brother’s home where we would be staying.

Current Tune - Mehlon ka raja mila - Anokhi Raat

This is another song that I am unable to find to download, so please go to this link, play the song, and read this post.

As the pheres completed, there was a huge round of applause from the peanut gallery (that would be my cousins, masis, and mamis  ). It was very cute, and it woke up most of the other relatives that had fallen asleep. Soon after that Neeraj put the sindoor on my forehead and then completed with the mangalsutra, but just put it near my neck for the photos and did not actually put it on. My parents had given Neeraj his ring (which has NP in diamonds  ) during the kanyadaan.

Current Tune: Jab Tak Poore Na Ho Phere Saat - Nadiya ke Paar

I am not able to find the above song, so please go to this link, and listen to it while you read this post.

We woke Mumma up as she was fast asleep in the room and let her know that “shaadi ka samay ho gaya hai.”

Its now 3.30 am, and we are heading downstairs to where the mandap was decorated outside in the garden area. Most of the relatives had left and only close ones were still sitting, laughing, and enjoying themselves. The majority of my cousins were still awake, kind of surprising , and the little ones still had full energy.

The first ceremony, prior to the start of the marriage ceremony, is putting on that beautiful chuda given by the dulhan’s mamaji and mamiji. The eldest mama in our family is Lalit Mama, so he and Anita Mami were going to go ahead and do their part. The chuda is of red and silver bangles that are then put on the dulhan. The bangles are bright and this will remain as a symbol of being newly married. In some families, the chuda is worn for the first year of marriage and in other families for six months. It isn’t set in stone in my family, so I have decided that I will wear for atleast six months.

Neeraj aur Poonam ki Shaadi - Part II

Current Tune - Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam - Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge

That time was finally here. The time that Neeraj and I dreamed about for so many years was actually here. There were so many people around us, and I got one good glimpse of Neeraj as I stood next to him. He was looking dashing in his gold sherwani and pagdi; looking like a Rajasthani raja (king).

He whispered in my ear that we were looking so wonderful together, but there was only one problem: my family had already stole his jhutis, and he felt that he was looking shorter than me. So I told him that I would talk to my cousins, who were standing near me. I told Chandni to go get the shoes so that he could wear them right now for the photographs, but she declined. She said that she wouldn’t do it, and I wasn’t happy. :irked: Its my day, dang it, you should do as you are told. So I did the next best thing, I took off my gold sandals and put them underneath the decorated chairs. Now there should be no height issue, I was also barefoot.

Tons and tons of photos were taking place at this time, and soon after it was time for the jaimala. Now, like in many Hindu shaadi traditions, in our families there is also the lifting of the dulha/dulhan. Neeraj’s side was first to get him up in the air; in fact he was so high up his pagdi was touching the ceiling. Now on my side, for some reason Dr. Katz (one of the Americans) was asked to be in front. Being his first Indian wedding, he really didn’t know how he could lift me. Then Kishore Jijaji and Lalit Mama moved in and tried to lift me. My wedding dress was so heavy, that I got only to about halfway to Neeraj before I begin to go down. Neeraj had won, they brought him down, and we completed the jaimala ceremony.

Current Tune: Saajanji Ghar Aaye - Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

As the elders from Neeraj’s side of the family enter to the main entrance of the hotel, they are welcomed by the elders in my family. Immediately at that time, there is a ceremony called milni that happens at that time. This is when specific relatives from both sides meet so that everyone knows who is the thoujee, chacha, mama, bhaiya, etc… Both persons then put a haar (lei) on each other, give a small hug, and then go back to where they were standing.

Now there is even one more catch — as my family is quite the rambunctious group, so what else they do is that they also try to pick up their counterpart. So for instance, when it was Lalit Mama’s turn he put the haar on Neeraj’s Mama, and then tried to pick him up. The other relatives around him usually egg him on to try to pick up the other in-law up, especially if the other relative is a bit on the plump side. It was funny when it was Shyamlal Jijaji’s turn (Funny Aunty’s husband) because he was so sneaky about it. He put the haar on, gave the hug, and as the photographer was taking the picture, he slowly started moving down and soon enough he had Neeraj’s relative up in the air and even made a circle. Cute:!:

After the milni and the photos, it was time for Neeraj to enter. At the entrance, he did the Toran, and yes, it was ready by the time Neeraj reached there. Then Mumma does the ceremony to welcome dulhe raja into the entrance. As she walked toward him, she didn’t know but my cousins immediately created a wall around her. They wanted Neeraj’s jhutis (shoes) so as Neeraj slowly began to get off, my brothers told him to stay on. They were going to give him the royal welcoming by putting him on their shoulders and carrying him into the entrance and to the stage:!:  Everything was happening so quickly that no one noticed when Kanika walked right under Mumma’s arms and grabbed Neeraj’s jhutis:!: :rotfl: Very sneaky:!:

May 17 - The Marriage Continues…

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

As I got into the car to go to the hotel, a realization was made. All the people in the car had no idea how to get to the hotel. Ajay Jiju was driving, he is from Mumbai, and Bobby Jiju and Pooja Didi are from Surat, and of course myself, which I wasn’t going to be big help either. So now what do we do? So we asked the salon owner if she could tell us how we could get to Hotel Clarks Amer. Her husband was also there, and he said that they are also going in that direction and that we could follow them.

So we were off to the venue which was about 20 minutes from Raja Park where the salon was located. It was around 10.45 pm, and we entered through a back entrance so that we wouldn’t be spotted by anyone. Bobby Jiju dropped us off as he went to go park the car. Pooja Didi and Ajay Jiju went to the counter to find out which room we had, and so that we could go up. The room was on the 8th Floor, and so there we went.
