My dear mother is the sweetest and most caring person that I know. She has done so much for Suraj and myself, and now for Neeraj as well. She is that pillar in our family which without we would not be able to stand. Mumma does everything, sacrificing her own happiness, for whatever we want.

My dear mother does every little thing with a smile. She says the most wonderful things that make anyone smile. She talks to anyone that comes in her way, and she makes a new friend every time. There are so many of Suraj and my friends that call her mother, didi, or aunty so lovingly for all the love that she gives everything she chats with them.

My dear mother is a great cook - she could have had her own show. She keeps her own house so organized and clean; I have so much to learn from her. She lightens the home, she makes me smile every time I see her, and I miss her dearly when I have to leave to go to my home. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t talk to her…..she is my idol - my role model, who I try to mimic….but its tough to be that wonderful.

So Mumma, Neeraj and I wish you a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!! We also wish you a very HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!! Also a very HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to Neeraj’s Mumma!!! We hope that we can give you both a lifetime worth of happiness.

The Good
So many good things have happened since Neeraj’s birthday. Overall it was a wonderful birthday for him. We enjoyed with family and friends, went out to a Mexican restaurant, had good conversation, and overall enjoyed incredibly.

Then the weekend after was my parents wedding anniversary. We went to be with them on their special day which brought in much snow. That was also enjoyable, and I think they enjoyed having us around together.

Then the weekend after that we went to my cousin Gudiya’s baby shower in Chicago. I am going to be a masi soon, and it is quite exciting for the extended family. Neeraj and I had thought that we would do a small dance for the baby shower, but it didn’t pan out because we didn’t have enough time to practice. Overall there was a lot of snow that night as we reached Chicago, but we had a good time. It was nice to see everyone as well. Wishing Gudiya and Jijs a very happy & safe delivery.

We have made some good financial decisions such as changes to our first mortgage, new savings account, plan to payoff one of the cars, and potentially looking at a long term investment in India.

That made the month of January just fly by… we made some purchases as well. Bought a new 37′ LCD TV on Super Bowl Sunday (it was an amazing deal) for the bedroom. Neeraj is putting together the TV stand as we speak. Then for my Christmas present that just came this week was a treadmill. Now I am able to exercise in the comfort of my own home, which I have wanted for a very long time. I bought Neeraj, for his birthday, the Cricket Ticket package so that he is able to watch the India cricket matches on TV rather the PC.

Saw a good movie last night, Halla Bol. If you haven’ seen it - NP would recommend it.

So overall, the year has started well for us. *touchwood* Let’s hope the rest of the year stays the same way.

The Bad
Not blogging is bad, not updating to the latest and greatest Wordpress edition is also quite bad.

Not getting our transcripts from our first semester of grad school has been bad. Look for why in the Ugly.

As for the news, its bad when all the media has to share with you is that Britney Spears being in and out of the hospital (frankly, I don’t care )……Saif / Kareena married, not married…. again… if you don’t have the facts, don’t share it. Raj Thackeray causing a mockery out of nothing… And that ruthless Joran Van der Sloot still out in the loose when he should be in a jail somewhere.

Having issues with our favorite computer came, Age of Empires Expansion Edition. Don’t know if its the network that is causing the issue (with one of our PCs on wireless it could definitely be a reason ), or something else. But it has been irritating for Neeraj and me when we are playing the game head to head and then all of a sudden the game comes to a halt. Then you have to restart the game after getting soo involved.

The Ugly
Customer service. I come to this all of the time. There is an issue with customer service in this country. We are losing it more and more. Companies and their employees are caring less about the customer than ever before. Along with customer service is having employees who know what the heck the company is selling, or be atleast somewhat knowledgeable to help the customer. Recently Neeraj and I have bought many things, but have faced many issues in various top notch stores like WalMart, Best Buy, Target, Circuit City, Sears, etc… where first it takes forever to find someone to help you find something, and then when you do find that person they don’t have any clue about the product that you are looking for — no matter if they are a specialist or not. Quite frustrating it can be. Another example would be that we had gone to the mall to check out treadmills. First we went to Sears, asked two people who were working in the exercise machine area, both had no clue which treadmill companies their store carried. Then we went to an exercise speciality store, and the “boy” (he seemed like a boy and not a man ) flatly told us that if we didn’t want to buy a treadmill less than $2000 then there is no reason to be in the store. Ok idiot, that can’t be good for business. So overall, these retail companies need to get their act together. I would say the same for fast food restaurants, especially our favorite Taco Bell, but the hope that you would have a better staff at that type of place is pratically impossible in today’s day and age. Sad isn’t it?

Now the issue with the transcripts. This has been ridiculous what Neeraj and I have gone through to get our transcript from our grad school, SLU. Well first of all you need to get immunizations in order to request your transcript. The reason that we need our transcripts so badly is that because that is the way we are able to get tuition reimbursement from our company. So I turned in both of our immunization forms - in fact I sent it overnight to the university. Then the next day in the afternoon I call them and I get to talk to a very rude lady in the Health and Counseling Services (not a good place for a rude person to be working, don’t you think? ). She told me that no one is here to give me an answer on whether they got my immunization form and that I needed to call back tomorrow. She didn’t tell me the timing of course - that I had to ask.

Then I call the next day again bright and early in the morning. After another lady put me on hold for more than 10 minutes, she comes back and tells me that I need to get two more shots (Tetanus Booster and Tuberculin Skin Test). First of all, I don’t know why as grad students we need to get immunizations. We are on campus for less than 3 hours in one week, and in fact, as an undergrad @ Bradley, where I was on campus throughout the whole day, I didn’t have immunizations done. The harder part was going to be for Neeraj. So then I asked the lady to tell me about what Neeraj needs to have done, and she says that we didn’t get his form. Now lady, both immunization forms were in ONE envelope, how could you have gotten one and not the other???? When you have incompetant people working at places such as these, its then you face such problems.

So I said forget it - we will just go together to the Urgent Care place when we go back to Morton, and Neeraj and I both will get those two shots. So then we went to Methodist Urgent Care in Morton on North Morton Avenue on a Friday afternoon in January. We took all of our immunization forms, prior immunization history, EVERYTHING that we could think of that they may ask. First they asked for all that information, and then we waited. Then the nurse comes through the door and says: VERMA. So I said, “which one”? She said, “Both”. So we both start walking towards her, and then said, “Which one of you is Verma?” I told her that Verma is our last name. It seemed that she didn’t comprehend. Then she said whose form is this one as she pointed to Neeraj’s medical examination form which showed the shots that he had gotten for immigration purposes. She wanted more information about the form, so I told her that he had to get a medical examination for immigration purposes, and this shows which shots he had gotten. You could tell that she didn’t want to understand nor was she listening to what I was saying.

She then took us to a room where we sat. Then numerous times she came in with Neeraj’s form bringing up stupid things, such as there are no dates listed on that medical form. Note that this form is a government document with the original kept with the USCIS, of course there are dates listed everywhere which Neeraj and I pointed out to her. So then she would leave and then come back and bring up some other stupid reason. Now I was getting quite frustrated with her. At the end she said that they will not be able to get Neeraj the TB or Tuberculin test because they don’t know what prior shots he had gotten. So now I was mad. We brought you the medical examination form that you don’t want to understand, and now you are causing us grief because we want preventative shots?? This is what our Medical System is all about??? Someone goes to you for help and you tell us that you can’t help us???? I was upset - and I could have said much more than I did at that time.

So then I told her that to give me the shots. She went back out with my baby book that had all of my shot information since I was a baby. She comes back and says again the dates are not listed. I was pretty pissed off at this point, and I pointed to her to the “Date” column, and said that this is the dates, what don’t you understand??? So then she goes out, and few minutes later comes back and says, “Yes we can do you because your prior history is listed”. FINALLY - the idiot finally understood. So I got my shots. I saw the doctor for a mere 1 and half minute because the shots were done by the nurse only (a different one from the idiot - thank goodness ).

The first nurse had also said earlier in the conversation that the doctor would have to charge administrative charges, visit charges, etc… At the end when I walked out, I asked how much I needed to pay, and the receptionist said, “nothing”. Great. For all the grief you people caused, I didn’t want to pay you a DIME ANYWAY!!!!!!!! So guess what, Morton Methodist Urgent Care on 1909 North Morton Avenue is strongly not recommended, unless if you want to jump through hoops and cause yourself a heart attack.

We finally sent off my papers to SLU, and they have accepted, and now I have requested a transcript copy. Geez louise. What a hassle. Neeraj’s form I still have to fill - who knows if he can even get those two shots done. Its just ridiculous when you can’t even get preventative shots.

So the long Thanksgiving break is now over. It definitely went too fast. We had gone to Morton as the parents were leaving for India on Friday (yes, Black Friday ). We had a great time with the parents and Suraj. We did head out on Black Friday at the mere darkness of 5am. Neeraj and I headed to Staples, a competitor of Office Max and Office Depot, to get a few things. Suraj woke up early to go to WalMart to get a Panasonic MiniDVD camcorder. We all were very successful. Neeraj and I got a 17 inch monitor, a nice shredder, a Panasonic 4 set phone, and many other things from Staples. We didn’t get as many things as we had gotten last year at Circuit City. But overall it was good, and we didn’t have to stand in line for 3 hours either.

Neeraj and I have a final paper due tomorrow. We have been working on it for two days (not including the research work we had done the prior week). I am finally done and once I complete this post, I am going to go downstairs and check how Neeraj is doing. The paper is suppose to be on a legal or ethical problem and then providing its solution. A 8-10 page paper is the requirement, and for those who haven’t written that lengthy of a paper for while (like us), its not easy! I still would like to thank my dear sweet blog which has helped me clear my thoughts and write more soundly than I think I ever did before. After all practice makes perfect. Sun rahe ho Neeraj my love??

Once this paper is turned in tomorrow, we only have the final exams to worry about for the second week of December. This is good because the office is really busy, and it will remain until April 2008 for me, so I am glad once these two classes will be done. Neeraj and I aren’t taking any classes in Spring 2008 but will in the Summer.

I am missing the parents already. Those who you talk to every day and then you don’t all of a sudden, totally can shake you. I know that they are having a great time with the family in India, but I still miss them. On Sunday, even Neeraj was missing them - feeling a void in our life for the first time in a long time. But khair no problem - we stay so busy in our life, there is only mere moments that we feel the emptiness. Mata Rani toh waise hai hi sahi aur Mumma Papa ko bhi mauka milna chaiye to enjoy their life. Khub masti karo, khub enjoy karo.

Chal yaar dost.. main jaati.. phir aati.. par ab jaati. Kya kare.. mann nahi lage… dil nahi kare.. par aage toh bhadna hai.

Now…the song. The song you are listening to is from the new movie, Apne, but why is it related to this post? Because if you listen to the words, apne toh apne hote hain (those who we consider as our loved ones, really are ours). Mere apne mere parivaar wale hain (those who are mine is my family), and what I am going to tell you from now forthright is between you, me, and the blog (don’t tell my father about anything below ). I can write this confidently because I know that my Papa will not read our blog.

My papa’s 60th birthday is this Thursday. My parents are in Dallas this week on a business trip, and Neeraj and I will pick them up from STL airport on Friday. As for my papa’s 60th birthday, the family wanted to do something for him as he always does so much for us. For many weeks, Mumma, Suraj, Neeraj, and myself had been planning trying to figure out what would be the best thing we can do for him. Well first we thought out the surprise party that we are throwing him this upcoming Saturday. Then we talked about the gift….what does Papa need?

Papa’s dear old car is falling apart…and fast. Its at 230k miles and could die any day. With the increased amount of traveling that my Papa is now doing with his job, he needs to have a nice car (and he deserves one too ). So the family had thought it out: buying Papa a car.

First, Suraj, Neeraj, and I started researching on Papa’s favorite car: Chevrolet Impala. We looked at the 2006 models because we wanted something newer. We found a few that we wanted to see, and then decided that July 7th weekend we will actually go around to the dealers to get the right deal.

So this past Saturday, Neeraj and I woke up early, went to Suraj’s office (yes, he was working on a Saturday ), checked out his office, and went to the first dealership, Ray Dennison. I had requested a 10.15am appointment with the dealer in order to be sure to see other dealerships throughout the day (if in case it didn’t work out). It didn’t work out because the inventory of 2006 Impalas was pathetic at this dealership. High miles and just in bad shape.

Then we went back to Suraj’s office, got his car, and went home. Suraj had breakfast, while Neeraj and I checked out more cars on the Internet. We even decided to broaden our scope (including Camrys in the search) to find out if we can find a nice 2006 or newer car for around $15k with around 15k miles. We found around 6 Impalas that fit that category at Sam Leman’s Chevy City in Bloomington, IL. So the three of us headed out in that direction.

I knew about this dealership as well because I had requested an appointment with them at 2pm, but we just happen to get there ahead time (12.30pmish). The guy that I talked to was on his lunch break so this other guy, who didn’t seem to happy with his job, tried to help us. He didn’t know any of the prices (and btw, on their internet advertisement for the cars that I saw, they mentioned that the prices listed in the ad - $15,995 wasn’t the correct price and that there was a lower price, and if you call or email, they would tell you the price). So I had done just the same a day before and asked for the real price for one of the Impalas, but I never got a response.

So then we checked out a few, one had a crack in the back of the car, one of them was just ugly and old looking, and there was one that was maroon in color that we liked. So we asked to test drive that until we waited for the real salesman to come. Suraj turned up the engine, and it sounded weird, but whatever. This salesguy that was helping us (remember the one who didn’t seem happy with his job), got the temp license plates, and we headed out on the famous Veterans Parkway of Bloomington. The first time Suraj put his foot on the brakes (after picking up some speed), the whole car seemed to shake. So later when the salesguy asked how we liked the car, I was like, “the brakes seem to be faulty”, and then he’s like, “oh it seems the roto something-or-other needs to be turned or fixed, you can negotiate that in your price”, and I was like, “o-ok”.

After the test drive, we went back to talk to the sales manager (mr. idiot who doesn’t know how to do math). Now this guy was an idiot, who knows how he became a sales manager. So the first thing he said, “are you guys going to barter for the price or come to the real deal?” and that made me angry. Come on man, you are a used car manager and you are asking that type of question??? Idiot. Then I told him about the internet ad saying that the price quote is not right, so what is the correct price quote? He hit some numbers on his calculator and came back and said that was the correct price. So then I asked him then why that is listed in the ad that isn’t the correct price, and he said well that was wrong, and he will get that fixed.

So we went further in talking, and we told him that the brakes aren’t working properly. I also told him that I wasn’t going to buy the car until he fixed the brakes (of course! Doesn’t that seem logical, who wants to pay $16k for a car when the brakes don’t work?). So he’s like what’s your price? We said $15k out the door, and he’s like $15k with the brakes fixed? Yes idiot, we didn’t come to your dealership thinking that the brakes of your car wouldn’t be working Somebody get this guy a brain! He of course went away and had to check some numbers and so wasted our time. He comes back what seemed like a half hour and said, “No we can’t do anything about that, the best deal we can give is $17k.” Well Mr. Idiot, we left that door telling him that we could buy a new 2007 Impala with hardly any miles with that type of money……and left his dealership I hate ignorance.

Guess what…we did what we said. We bought a new 2007 Maroon Impala at a different dealership later in the day (all three of us had a headache after talking to Mr. Idiot Sales Manager so we went for ice cream @ Dairy Queen then went further car shopping ). We found this great deal, a newer car, with only 427 miles on it, and bought it for Papa.

Now Papa doesn’t know, and he won’t know until this upcoming Saturday when we will surprise him. The plan is to put the keys of the car in a big box, wrap it, and give it to him. When he opens it, then we will take him outside to his new car. He is going to be surprised We all can’t wait for that moment.

So as the song goes… apne toh apne hote hain….

Surprise Trip to India
Neeraj and I surprised his family by showing up in Hindaun City two days before Holi. No one in his family, except for his middle brother in Jaipur who helped us coordinate everything, knew about us coming. Just about a week before we were going to leave, his elder brother had a slight clue that we would be coming on Holi but didn’t know which date. So we reached Delhi from Chicago on March 1, and we left by Janshatabdi to Hindaun City in the afternoon of March 2. We had borrowed a mobile (Motorola Razr) from my masi/jijaji in Delhi, so we had a phone and all. Once we reached Bharatpur, Neeraj called his elder brother to let him know where we reached, how many bags we had (4 big bags and 2 hand bags), and to please bring a van or so for help at the train station. We reached Hindaun City, and there was Neeraj’s brother with everything ready — coolie and all. Neeraj and I got in the van, and his brother was on his scooter, and we were off to my sasural. As the gate opened and our van reversed in, you can hear the “oohhs” and “aahs” and the “yeh log kahan se aa gaye” as Neeraj’s two sisters (who reached Hindaun that morning), his bhabhiji, the kids, and Neeraj’s mother were in total shock that we had shown up. Of course later in the evening when Neeraj’s father also came home, he also was in shock to see us already there.

The great surprise was a success - Neeraj and I have been planning for 4-5 months on our trusty whiteboard, trying to think about anything and everything that might happen to make sure that the surprise works out. Neeraj’s family tried everything to find out when we would be coming, but we stayed strong like a rock. But the surprises weren’t over yet…….

Holi
I would have to say that Holi was an amazing experience. Of course this was my first Holi ever in India, and wow! what a great time we had. Neeraj’s middle brother and bhabhiji came from Jaipur that morning, and so we had a full house (only one sister was missing, and she lives in Ahmedabad and couldn’t make it). We woke up early, after sleeping late the night before, and we started getting everything ready (pichkaaris, various colors, water, etc..) for our 4 special kids (Harshit, Monica, Shubham, and Himanshu). The kids had a great time standing at the front gate, asking uncles to please pick up the pichkaari that had fell to the ground, as the uncle came closer to pick it up, the other three would douse him with the colors (soaked in water).

Soon after watching the kids, Neeraj’s eldest sister decided that its time for the adults to get into it. So who was the first to get picked on — any guesses???? Yes the new member of the family - me! I wasn’t even ready, had still my glasses on, and she came up from behind with a handful of rang and got me good!!! I yelled for Neeraj, but as soon as he had reached it was too late — I was all pink. Neeraj’s youngest sister couldn’t hold back, and so she also got into the fun. Of course I wasn’t going to let anyone put color on me without a revolt, so I returned with fire by getting both sisters so good that their faces were all black. The best part about Holi this year was that Neeraj and I were together, enjoying with family, tons of masti - it was just as I had dreamt earlier. We played for five hours, we all were black in color….our clothes were a mess, but what great fun we had doing that to each other!

Another surprise was soon on its way in the evening of Holi for the family…….what was it? How did they react? Did they like it? Find out soon, in the next post.

Then there was a bulletin: office is closing at 2 pm due to the winter weather warning. That doesn’t happen that often in the Midwest in any company. Neeraj and I knew that this was serious so we headed out just like the rest of the people at 2. There was a huge pile of ice on our Sonata, and it took us a good half hour to scrape and use the de-icer to get rid of it. The temperature was around freezing, and my hands could feel it. Our commute back to our home isn’t as bad as our colleagues, so we reached home in a mere 5 minutes.

That afternoon and night it remained with freezing rain pouring down turning into snow after midnight. It was becoming a bit worrisome on how it was going to be on the first day of December (Friday). Neeraj had gotten the Employee Hotline number so that we could call in the morning to find out if the office is open. Friday morning we had about 6 inches of snow, and it was still coming down:!: We called to find out what was happening in the office, and there was a delay in opening. The building would open at 10am, and it was up to the discretion of the manager on whether his/her staff should come in. Soon after my manager called and said that he was stuck, and he didn’t expect me to come in. Neeraj’s manager was also working from home, so we both ended up just doing the same.

My brother Suraj ended up not going into the office either. In Morton there was 10 inches of snow:!: This is an unusual case, it never snows that much there. After trying to shovel the driveway, he is regretting not taking that snow blower when I told him to.

Family News
Wednesday morning, we received the news that my eldest thoujee, Bade Papa, passed away. Mumma had called me while I was at the office, and then when I got a chance to call her back her and Papa were already headed to Chicago. Bade Papa is my Papa’s eldest brother, and he did have quite a few health problems, but in recent days he seemed in good health. Bade Papa lived with his son. daughter-in-law, and their two kids in Chicago. As Mumma and Papa headed to Chicago to be with the family, they knew that the weather was going to get pretty bad the next day.

Bade Papa may you rest in peace.

Granted, my father doesn’t have the best car to drive, but at this time we haven’t had the chance to get him another one. There was one good thing that was done due to my cousins pushing which was that Papa got the front tires, which I hear was in pretty bad condition, changed at my chacha’s gas station. After the funeral in the afternoon on Thursday, the parents began to make the supposedly three hour trek back to Springfield. But the weather changed into ice just about an hour and half into the drive. That three hour drive became a driving nightmare as they reached home in six hours instead of three:!: Their car spun 360 degrees twice on the three way highway just 25 miles from Springfield. It was a very scary time for my parents, and even for us as we sat worried just praying to Mata Rani that they reach safely home.

Thank goodness that they did - but the level of ice and snow was tremendous in Springfield as well. They came home to no electricity, and it took a good 15 hours before it was restored.

But all is well. The main important thing is that they are safe and healthy. Only Mata Rani is to thank for that.

Yes we checked out the ads on Thanksgiving, and then I woke up the clan (Neeraj, Suraj, and Vinay Bhaiya) at 2 am, and we headed out to Circuit City with a bang:!: I wanted to get the I/O Magic External Hard Drive for 40 bucks. Neeraj wanted to get the portable DVD player for his family in India, Suraj was going to get Neeraj and my Christmas gift (GPS system for our car :grin:), and Vinay Bhaiya wanted to get the 1 GB memory card for his digital camera for 3 bucks. But once we had reached at 2.45 am, we began to rethink on whether we would be able to get anything because the line was soooo long. Really, the line had more than 60 people standing in line, and we headed towards the back of the line. The store would open at 5 am, so we still had ample amount of time to stand out in the cold (thank goodness it wasn’t freezing ).

But finally the news is positive - we got everything we wanted and more:!:

Serial News

Of course we all were stuck on Bigg Boss to find out not only who will be out (which was Kashmera), but also to find out what the hungama was with Rakhi Sawant:!: She caused this huge fight with Amit, and it was necessary to see if they would duke it out, but unfortunately nothing like that happened. We did, however, find out that Rakhi’s bf is none other than Abhishek Awasthi, the guy who was also in Zee CineStars. Rakhi did end up apologizing to Amit. So we will see what happens this week as FOUR people have been nominated to be ousted from the house of Bigg Boss, one being Rakhi herself.

Sunday I watched on Aaj Tak the news of Abhishek, Amitabh, and family with Aishwarya being in Banaras for some pooja. Yes, it is going to be true that Aish and Abhishek are marrying next year, and they are doing special manglik pooja currently to ensure that everything works out properly.

I have been waiting for this project to start that is very near my home, but it has been delayed for three more weeks. Now they want to send me to Texas for three weeks for another project starting Monday, so I might be there starting next week. I wanted to find out more information whether the project will get extended further, which will cause me problems. We will see what happens in the next few days…

Neeraj starts his traveling on Sunday. He is taking a flight to Delhi, take a train to Lucknow, and reach around midnight. Then he will stay in a hotel that night and wake up Monday morning head to Lucknow’s Passport Office. His friend, Gaurav, hopefully should come from Kanpur with Neeraj’s police certificate otherwise he shall have to go to Kanpur later that evening and return to Lucknow that night. Then next morning he shall receive his passport and certificate from the passport office. Now what is next?

Well, he might be heading home on Tuesday evening, taking a train to Hindaun from Lucknow (right now he’s waitlisted) reaching Wednesday morning. Reason? His birth certificate has some issues that his bhayia has not been able to correct yet with the magistrate, so Neeraj will have to go himself. If all goes well then he will leave Thursday evening via train (also waitlisted) from Hindaun for Mumbai. With all the rains in Gujrat, you know that his train won’t reach on time on Friday afternoon.

Once he reaches Friday, he will have to go to the notary place in Mumbai and get his birth certificate and the other document notarized and translated in English (they have to be in the local language, hence it will be in Hindi by the magistrate).

Then one last weekend to get everything ready, and then the week after it will be time for his interview.

Praying that all goes well on my side as well as his. I didn’t want to travel right now but I guess it will be fine until Neeraj is here.
