European Tour – Part I

So after one week returning from Europe, I am finally feeling that I am back in normalcy. For a while it was going to sleep early, waking up early, and just not feeling well syndrome. But now, the feeling is back to normal.

We had an awesome time in Europe. We focused on three major cities, and so I am going to provide details in three parts.

Neeraj and I left STL on Friday night to meet the parents and Suraj in Morton. Saturday morning (August 30), we got up early and left for Milwaukee. We had a Northwest Airlines flight from Milwaukee to Detroit and then to Frankfurt, Germany. A point that we learned in Milwaukee that is a good to know while flying in this type of scenario: Some airlines are now charging if you check in your first bag. However, if you flying domestic and then international, then the latter rules apply. Keep that in mind.

It was great – we had reached Detroit ahead of schedule and had enough time to relax before the long 8 and half hour haul to Frankfurt. Unfortunately none of us had anything great to saw about Northwest Airlines. Just like many of the other cut-back airlines, not enough space was the biggest problem.

We finally reached Frankfurt at 7am Sunday morning. After customs, immigration, getting our bags, it was now time to go get the car. As Neeraj and I planned for this vacation, we decided it was going to be more beneficial for us if we have a car rather than other types of public transportation. We think it ended up being a great idea and hopefully you will see why as well.

So we stopped at the Avis counter, where she provided us with a Mercedes C-220. Psyched I was to drive a Mercedes – only to reach to the car to find out it was a station wagon! Oh well, Mercedes is Mercedes.

It had a built in GPS, which at first was hard to handle, but then we got used to it. We headed to the Novotel hotel where we staying for that night. The hotel was nice, but just had a few things that we weren’t too excited about:

  • Transparent bathroom door – yes, you could look through the door and see what the person was doing in the bathroom, none of us understood this one
  • No air conditioning – apparently Germans like to say on energy
  • No fans even!
  • No continental breakfast
  • The best part was that its Internet access was free – unlike any of the other Novotels that we stayed at, but that was the interesting part of the whole trip.

Because it was so early in the morning, we had the whole day to roam around Frankfurt. We got in the car and headed for breakfast. Because Neeraj knew Frankfurt well, we decided to head near downtown Frankfurt, closer to its main train station, Hauftbahnhof. There were plenty of places to eat within the station and tons to roam around in.

There was also a tourist inquiry in the train station, so we decided to go there to find out what we could do next. To behold, there was a MuseumFest happening near the Rhine River, walking distance from the train station. So we decided to walk in that direction. Boy was it crowded!!! The weather was also getting hot. :hot:

We ended up walking up one side of the river and down the other. They were having canoeing contests, other games, and lots and lots of food and beer. The majority of the Germans there were eating and drinking. Of course it was Sunday, so everything else was basically closed. So we went around one or two of the museums that were nearby the Rhine River, but mostly just looked at the stalls. Sort of reminded us of P-Fest but not completely.

We spent a good 4 hours there just roaming around and soon became tired. We decided to go home and relax. Then we would come back later and take the sightseeing bus to go around the city of Frankfurt. It was suppose to be an open double decker bus. However because it was Sunday and not a lot of people showed up, we ended up going in this rinky dinky bus, that of course – didn’t have air conditioning!! Now folks – it was hot – we are not talking 70 degree weather, we are talking 90s including humidity! So some type of “air” was needed, and everyone agreed.

Overall Frankfurt was a decent metropolitan city. It wants to become the next New York of Europe, but it still has a lot to grow. What we learned about the Germans was that they were very “free”. The amount of freedom that they are given was very different from even what we have in the US. So for example, prostitution is legal, and its right next to the banking area (maybe 2 streets over). Germans choose how to live their life, the government does not oppose alot of laws and rules on them. You can smoke and drink as much as you want – in fact the tour guide said that most Germans drink more beer than water. I saw a little kid, like 6 or 7 years old, taking sips of beer with his father. For the same reason, they don’t have imposed speed limits on their AutoBahn (highways). You can drive whatever you want, and in fact, they say that they have less accidents than the US does by having it this way! I think their roads and driving is much more sophisticated than the US as well. Lastly of course, we learned about the Germans conserving energy. May it be air conditioning, not only in public places but also in their cars, but also the use of fan or electricity is included. Very different lifestyle than the US.

So that was the end of Frankfurt for now. Next morning we got up and left for Paris.

Tourist Visas for Europe – UK & Schengen

This post is for those who are not US citizens as it will share information on how to apply for a tourist visa to visit the United Kingdom (England) and countries in the European Union. Note what I am going to provide as information is if you are applying within the United States but holding a non US passport. For instance, Neeraj is a US Permanent Resident and holds an Indian passport. US citizens are exempt and do not need a visa to visit the UK or countries within the European Union.

    UK Tourist Visa

  • Apply online by completing the UK tourist visa application here.
  • At the end of the application, you will be told, based on your location, to go to the nearest USCIS location for your biometrics appointment.
  • Complete biometrics appointment.
  • Create a package to send to UK consulate. Your online application will tell you where you need to mail the documentation. You can go back to the website where you applied to get that information otherwise an email will also be sent to you that should have that information in there.
  • Your package should include the following: biometrics stamped document, passport, Permanent Resident or other visa that lets you legally live in the US, 3 months of bank statements, travel itinerary, letter from employer, 3 months payslips, etc…
  • Send your package via Fedex or UPS. We sent ours overnight so that they would receive immediately. Use a service that is quick and trackable like Fedex or UPS.
  • Now wait. You will not receive any information/status about your visa. Usually it takes 5 business days.
  • Finally you will receive an email saying that they are processing your application.
  • After that you will receive one more email saying that they have sent your documents back to you via UPS with a tracking number. Note that you will need to make sure someone is home to receive the documents because a signature is required.
  • It should be that easy. Great part is that you don’t have to go anywhere in person, other than the biometric, to turn in your papers. That was the best part of the UK tourist visa process. The worst part is getting status of your application. You can’t call them, you can’t email, you can’t do anything other than wait. That sucks because sometimes you are in a time crunch and need to get your documents back soon. I would do this atleast a month ahead of your trip to make sure that you have enough time, and make sure that you send all the proper support documentation – the more the better.

    Schengen Visa
Note this is based on experience with the German Consulate only.

  • Complete the application form and print out.
  • Prepare all supporting documentation to take along with you to the German Consulate. This would include but not limited to the following: 3 months bank statements, travel initnerary (including hotel confirmation number), health insurance card, letter from employer, passport, US Permanent Resident or other visa that will let you legally stay in the US, etc…
  • When ready, go to your nearest German Consulate office. Provide all documentation and pay fee (money order or cash only).
  • Write down USPS tracking number, if supporting documents will be mailed back to you while at the German Consulate office.
  • Processing at the Chicago German Consulate usually takes 2-3 business days. Unfortunately that has not been the case for us. So…the waiting game begins again!
  • The best part of the German Consulate is that you can email them to ask any questions. They respond very quickly and are very helpful. The other good thing is that you can also call them in regards to any questions or status of your application. We have spoken to them a few times and everytime they have been very nice and courteous to us. The biggest problem for us has been that they did mention that they would be sending our documents back to us via USPS overnight delivery this past Tuesday. It is now Friday and we still have not received our documents. It was this morning that we found out that it was mailed actually Thursday, not Tuesday. We cannot track our package either because on the USPS website it says that this tracking number does not exist. :irked: The other thing that is a bit tricky and not well known is that USPS Express Mail does not deliver overnight to all locations. Ours is one of those locations, and we found that out on their website just a few minutes ago. :banghead: It takes 2 business days to get it to our place, so now we are waiting. Hopefully at the latest on Monday we should receive it otherwise we will call them again (I have already sent the consulate another email stating my dissatisfcation).

Hope this is helpful others that maybe going through the same that we have recently experienced. Share your thoughts if you have had any experiences of the same by commenting on this post below.

    Summer Ended – Enjoying Olympics

So finally the time is getting closer. The summer is ending…our class finally ended. Neeraj and I did really well – we both got an “A” in both of our summer classes. Now its time to party – go on vacation!! Yes, the family is going to Europe – and really, I can’t wait.

We have some great things planned while we are in Europe, and I really hope that everything goes well for us. We will be traveling alot and going through a lot of countries in a short time period. I hope that the famiy does not get tired throughout the 8 days that we will be in Europe.

Its been great watching the Olympics the past week. I have watched some great soccer, gymnastics, tennis, table tennis, swimming, diving, etc.. I think that Olympics is a great stage for athletes from all over the world to come to one place and show the spirit of the games. Its been really great to see China shine in so many different fields. Unfortunately its very disappointing to see my home country India, that has the next biggest population after China, did not have a very high level of participation in the various fields. The biggest problem that is in India is that not many sports are popularized. Many kids don’t think about becoming a swimmer or gymnast. Its usually just becoming a cricket player – that too only boys think about that.

I can’t believe we are almost halfway done with August. Time sometimes flies so quickly. Its going to go much faster for us as we finish the month with our trip that I mentioned above. Then we will be back for two months and then we will go to India. Then by the time we get back it will be halfway through November. Soon after it will be December. I can’t wait!!

Mourning a Death – Ishmeet Singh

So I couldn’t believe it when I read on Times of India this evening that Ishmeet Singh had passed away. For those who don’t know who this is, Ishmeet is the first winner of the singing reality show Star Voice of India in 2007. He was a mere 19 years old when he became the winner of the show. He had a great voice – very sweet. I knew that he was going to go a long way, atleast I thought, when I saw him for the first time performing at the auditions for Star Voice of India.

    Ishmeet Singh (1989 - 2008)

Ishmeet was found dead in Maldives yesterday. Right now it is being mentioned that his death was due to drowning in the hotel’s swimming pool. There are conflicting reports right now on whether Ishmeet knew how to swim or not. Ishmeet was in Maldives to attend the Star Voice of Maldives on this upcoming weekend.

India has a lost not only a wonderful voice, but a very good human being. All of the comments that have been given by his co-stars, previous judges, etc… have been that he was a down to earth, easy going, and very well behaved person. It was mentioned on Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar that Ishmeet also had a girlfriend, but it was not confirmed.

I feel very bad for his parents and family. NP.com sends their condolences to Ishmeet’s family. It is going to be tough for them to get over the fact that they have lost their only son. Many don’t know that Ishmeet had fulfilled his mother’s dream of completing his studies before he entered the music industry. After winning the Star Voice of India title, he then came on Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar to defend his championship. Unfortunately he was eliminated before the show at ended.

I have always liked Ishmeet’s voice and his innocence can be found on his face. I feel so shocked that he has passed, I just can’t imagine what his family would be going through right now. This is the second water related death that Neeraj and I know of this year only. The other was one of Neeraj’s colleagues that died of a jet ski accident here in Missouri.

Ishmeet left behind his parents and one sister. May Mata Rani give your family so much strength and courage that they are able to move on life with all the great memories that you have given them in their lives.

Rest in Peace Ishmeet. May God Rest Your Soul. You will be missed…. forever.

4th of July – How Memorable It Was!

So I got some slack from a few of my friends for writing a post from class. If only you guys knew the *pain* we go through every Tuesday and Thursday sitting in this class…..and you would be blogging too!!!! :rotfl:

Anyway, because today was such a good day, I felt like blogging. But before that, I noticed that I really didn’t talk about the 4th of July long weekend. So I am going to start there first.

4th of July is of course USA’s Independence Day. This year it was on a Friday, so Neeraj and I were very lucky to have our dear friend Beth come and visit us in STL. I was very excited because Beth hadn’t seen our house yet, and I wanted her to see it.

So she was coming on Thursday night at around 10pm – perfect, something for Neeraj and I look forward to while we sit in this horribly boring class. Of course that would be the day that our professor would keep us late an extra 20 minutes…so we get to the airport about 10 minutes before Beth’s flight was going to land.

She arrived, and we knew from that moment, it was going to be an exciting 3 day weekend. So then that night we had leftover Indian food for dinner (at like 11 pm!). Beth said that she wanted to sleep in the next morning, and Neeraj & I were very okay with that. Guess who woke up first? Beth!!! Ya ya her “sleep in” was like 8.30! So then on Saturday morning, Beth and I made yummy and delicious pancakes on my griddle topped with strawberries and whipped cream!! It was amazing! Then that day we got ready and went to the Botanical Gardens. I guess because it was 4th of July it was free admission which was great for us.

Botanical Gardens were really beautiful, and we spent about three or four hours just roaming around there. Beth took lots of photos while Neeraj and I just looked around. Then once we were done there, we asked Beth what she would like to have for dinner. She knew that in our home every Friday night was Taco Bell Night, so she too, wanted to have join in the Verma Family fun of Taco Bell night!

Then we came home, and I don’t remember if we did much after that. We definitely didn’t know when the fireworks were going to be near our home, so we decided to take the walk to the area where the fireworks were going to be to check it out. We walked into the frozen custard place for some delicious dessert and then began to notice that there weren’t a lot of people around us. :lookaround: Beth said that we should ask someone, so we told her to ask the frozen custard ladies. So she went back in there only to find out that the fireworks are on Saturday! So then we walked home…only to watch some amazing fireworks in all directions — pretty awesome.

We came home to play a game of Settlers of Catan, which is the best game in the world. Even though we were playing the original version it was a very long game, at the end, I won. We went to sleep after 1 am.

Saturday morning came around, and again Beth woke up really early. She was tensed about a decision she was going to make very soon, hence wasn’t sleeping well. We spent the day playing tennis. It was absolutely wonderful! Beth is a great player, and Neeraj was great competition for her. We all played for like three hours, and it was very enjoyable. It was hard to tell that Beth hadn’t played for a while – she was playing in stride.

After tennis we came home and relaxed. After a while, we began to make dinner. Dinner was going to be great that night because I was going to make a traditional Indian dinner for her. She had her book and pen as she wrote down the recipes. We had samosas, kachoris, and spring rolls for appetizer, then we had mattar paneer, daal, rice, and naan as part of the meal. All was good, and the first time that I actually made the dishes with exact measurements so that Beth could write down the recipe. I shared with her all of my dear Mumma’s secret recipes – she is sworn to secrecy! Just kidding.

After eating sooooo much, we all flopped down, and chilled out before we headed for the fireworks again that night. We couldn’t go without having frozen custard, but this time, the line was out the door, so we knew the fireworks show was going to happen. The fireworks show was great but seemed to happen so quickly. It was synchronized with patriotic music, and it was really well done.

Then we walked back to our house (which by the way took about 20 minutes one way), and played the extended version of Settlers of Catan. So Diane and Daniel get excited, NP knows how to play the fun version of the game!!! Anyway, Beth won that game but it was alot of fun!

We went to sleep, and then on Sunday….finally…. Beth slept in!!! I had to go wake her up at 11am! We had pancakes and strawberries topped again, and it was delicious. Then we didn’t do much..atleast I can’t remember. We did watch the very awesome Federer vs. Nadal Wimbeldon final match. What an absolutely amazing match!!! Neeraj and I were going for Federer and Beth was going for Nadal. So it was quite funny because every time Federer got a point, Neeraj and I would make a lot of noise, and then when Nadal would come back with a point, Beth would cheer and make a lot of noise!!

The match was really long..we had STL style pizza (Imo’s) and then it was time for Beth’s flight. Neeraj and I couldn’t believe how quickly three days had passed – it just seemed like she had just gotten there, and the weekend was all over.

We really had a great time with her, and we hope to go visit her soon too! We do hope that she come back to visit us again too…after all the fun we had this time.

    Fare Trackers..How Helpful They Are..

I am bored out of my mind in this class. :irked: It should end in a half hour but I am doubting it with the pace the professor is going through the lecture. This has so far been the worst class for us at SLU.

Anyway, to pass the time, I wanted to share with you our current exploration of flight tickets to Europe for the latter part of August. Neeraj and I have been tracking various websites to find out the best rates.

Here are some of the good ones that also let’s you search for international fares:

  • Kayak – good site for checking flexible dates and getting rates from multiple websites
  • FareCast – You are able to see what the exact rates were for the past 30 days and they give their prediction on whether you should buy now or later
  • MakeMyTrip (if traveling to India) – usually provides very competitive rates…we have bought from here once
  • I have stopped checking sites like Travelocity, Orbitz, Expedia, Hotwire, etc… They really don’t provide any good rates. Same for travel agents – Internet rates are definitely more competitive rather than going to a travel agent (my own experience).

With the crude oil price so high, you have to keep checking for prices. We have been checking since March – and really, we haven’t seen much of a difference. We do see that if we buy a month ahead of time, we will see some favorable difference, but nothing much more than that. Its crazy when traveling to Europe can be comparable to traveling to India :!:

Today was the first day in quite some time that crude oil prices were down ($6 to be exact  ), so Neeraj wants to wait to buy the tickets, and FareCast has reaffirmed his decision.

So if you are traveling soon, have a look at the websites above. They may come out handy for you. Right now I have them setup to send me daily alerts to let me know if rates are changing so that we can make a quick decision if we want. As a fact that I had read, fares usually change within 50 hours, so these alerts can come in very handy.

The other thing I have noticed is that its better to have flexible dates. We have fixed dates, and its guaranteed that we will pay more on the date that we want to leave rather if we would have left two days later. In our case, it doesn’t make sense to leave two days later because we are going on a long weekend.

Jo Jeeta Wohi…..Arre Woh Toh Chala Gaya

Neeraj and I have been hooked on Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar since it began on Star Plus. But this past Friday was a sad day..atleast for me. Vinit was voted off the show…. Vinit. Kya yaar…The guy that scores the highest was voted off. Really shocking for me because I really thought that this time Vinit had it within him to go all the way to the end. The only one that really would be stopping him is the very consistent Debojit. Out of nowhere, Debojit has been really singing well (loved the Sharabi song that he sang). Really I thought it was going to be a repeat of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa but the Indian junta let me down.

Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar - Indian Singing Reality Show of Champions

The other thing is that I think the judges play favorites with Abhijeet. Theek hai woh jeeta hai Indian Idol but come on yaar….play it fair. I really suspected that Farah woh definitely have her favorites, but not Vishal & Shekhar. They would definitely play the game fair, but the week previous, I also saw them giving higher scores to Abhijeet even though he sang horribly. Even this time, Vishal was much more fair than Shekhar. If you are a judge, you should really act like one.

Out of everyone else, I think that Toshi is the weakest. He hasn’t been performing great these days, seems like the riyaaz is much much less for him. He isn’t getting to the Vinit or Debojit’s level who come back every week with a rocking number. Not only do they sing the song in their own stye, but they sing it well. Abhijeet has been of course off his rocker – not been singing well at all. Rahul remain flamboyant as ever but he sang better previously. Harshit is also off….not singing in tune and don’t know if it is because he gets nervous on stage or what, but he these days isn’t singing as well as the beginning of the show. Sometimes I think that they are just getting tired but then its like, if they are getting tired now, then how will they ever be able to do this for the rest of their lives?

Anyway, very sad I am for Vinit. He really didn’t deserve to be voted off…atleast not this week. Now I don’t even know who I should root for…..most likely Harshit? Nah….it will have to be Debojit. I feel really deserves it more than anyone else.
