May 13 – 8 Bomb Blasts in Jaipur

If in case you have not heard, there were about 8 blasts in Jaipur yesterday evening Indian Standard Time.
Jaipur Blasts - May 13

Neeraj’s immediate brother (Manoj Bhaiya) and sister-in-law (Maya Bhabhi) live in Jaipur. When I heard the news at 10.45am yesterday after a voicemail from my mother, I called Neeraj to make sure he knew. He did, and he was already calling his eldest brother in Hindaun City to make sure Manoj Bhaiya and Maya Bhabhi are fine. The mobile phone line was cut off after the bomb blasts happened, so it was after an hour or so when we finally heard back.

The majority of Neeraj’s extended family also live in Jaipur. This also includes his eldest sister-in-law’s (Renu Bhabhi) family. They live & work in Chandhpol where one of the blasts occurred. They were also all fine.

My friends that went with me to India for Neeraj and my marriage may remember atleast one of the places quite well – Bapu Bazaar. They had the opportunity during that time to go around Jaipur with my family members, including Johari Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar.

Very tough time for the South Asian countries. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families that have lost a loved one in this horrific blast. The blasts did happen on bicycles and so far 12 have been detained that may be linked with the blasts.

Such things are awful when they happen – and we pray that we have peace on earth very soon.

Happy Birthday & Mother’s Day!

Current Tune – Maa – Taare Zameen Par

It was a wonderful weekend due to one person: Mumma. It was a special weekend for our family because it was my dear mother’s birthday and mother’s day. So today’s post dedicated to NP’s dear mothers.

My dear mother is the sweetest and most caring person that I know. She has done so much for Suraj and myself, and now for Neeraj as well. She is that pillar in our family which without we would not be able to stand. Mumma does everything, sacrificing her own happiness, for whatever we want.

My dear mother does every little thing with a smile. She says the most wonderful things that make anyone smile. She talks to anyone that comes in her way, and she makes a new friend every time. There are so many of Suraj and my friends that call her mother, didi, or aunty so lovingly for all the love that she gives everything she chats with them.

My dear mother is a great cook – she could have had her own show. She keeps her own house so organized and clean; I have so much to learn from her. She lightens the home, she makes me smile every time I see her, and I miss her dearly when I have to leave to go to my home. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t talk to her…..she is my idol – my role model, who I try to mimic….but its tough to be that wonderful.

So Mumma, Neeraj and I wish you a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!! We also wish you a very HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!! Also a very HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to Neeraj’s Mumma!!! We hope that we can give you both a lifetime worth of happiness.

Happy Mother's Day and Happy Birthday Mumma!!!

Its Only the Beginning for Change

Current Tune: Chaaliya – Tashan

Change is good…especially when that change involves technology. Before that, welcome my dear blog to our new theme. I hope that you like your new look because I love it :!: Neeraj finally helped me get the stupid widgets to start working – so now I have a new thing to add to your sidebar.

So in the weekend I called DirecTV because I wanted to find out if we were in any type of contract. Ever since the announcement that Star Plus and Star One is now being shown on Dish Network, there has been really no motivation for Neeraj and me to keep DirecTV.

So the good news was that we were in no contract, and we wouldn’t be charged anything extra if we cancelled our service with them today. The only bad part is that I wouldn’t be able to watch MTV Roadies anymore because Dish Network does not offer MTV India. But since Prabhjot was voted out in the last episode I could careless on who would win anyway :!:
Dish Network
Then today we went to Mid Rivers Mall because we knew that there was a stall for Dish Network. So we thought we would talk to the sales rep and get everything setup. Unfortunately for the second time in a row (we went on Saturday too), there was no sales rep at the stall. :irked: Neeraj & I decided we would find the next closest Dish Network office because it makes it so much easier if you talk to someone about what you are getting. So we drove around to find the next closest retailer and for the first time Google Maps failed us. :irked: Finally we came home, and in the mail we had another ad from one of Dish Network’s retailers. So I started calling – and there was one that gave us a great deal, and so as soon as Thursday we are going to have Dish Network!! :hyper:

So here comes 15 Hindi Channels from Zee TV to Sony to Star to Aaj Tak to B4u to Sahara…….very excited. Both of our HD television sets will actually show in High Def which is also better than what we have today (HD not showing on the master bedroom TV). We will also have two DVRs which is a big benefit too :!: All in all its a great deal for us.

Neeraj is also excited – he gets more regional sports channels so that he can watch his baseball, basketball, and football games. Go White Sox and Bears :!:

So as we talk about change, I began to wonder what else is happening in the world that is may cause alot of change…..here’s what I came up with:

  • Banning drinking and smoking in Bollywood movies? That would cause major change.
  • Obama to win the Democratic nomination? That would be a great benefit to the USA.
  • Gas prices to reach $5/gallon? That would be a change that now seems isn’t that far away then we used to think. Scary. :vomit:
  • Believing in the stock market as an investment? Yup that is a change in belief after seeing how well Neeraj has been doing with our $$.
  • DVDs to BluRay? A change that was unexpected. But potentially for the good? Only time will tell, I guess.
  • Facebook as the new Myspace? A very good change. Facebook definitely has a good interface and is more user friendly than Myspace.
  • The list can go on…….chalo kabhi na kabhi end toh karna hi hai.

    Always Something Happening

Current Tune: Sab Kuch Seekha Humne

So I have updated to the latest version of wordpress – 2.5.1. Its an achievement because the last thing that I have been working on these days is my blog. Sorry dear blog, sometimes there are other priorities that took over our life. But now its just the beginning of your makeover. A new theme will be headed soon, but first, I have to make it.

    In other news…….

A few busy weekends have past — an engagement party almost three weeks ago, Mata ki Chowki last weekend, and friends over this past Saturday. :lookaround: Overall the month of April has been good to us. Phase 1 of our home project has begun with fireworks. Neeraj and I are 80% complete with the master bedroom. We bought a new king size bed to fit our king size lifestyle (yeah right!! ) and then on Saturday morning our beautiful bedroom furniture arrived. Now the room looks like a master bedroom.

But we have noticed something…..companies and their deliveries.. not so good. The guys at Mattress Firm didn’t bring a frame when they delivered our mattress. So of course they wouldn’t set anything up without the frame. :!: That wasn’t good. Then when the Value City delivery guys arrived on Saturday morning, there were no screws or hardware in order to setup the bedroom furniture. :banghead: Why don’t companies do a better job or were we unlucky both times? I can’t think this was a coincidence. With the Value City guys, they had to drive to to get the hardware screws from another one of their drivers. So guess what – not only did you make us wait but you also wasted alot of gas to get those darn screws.

Anyway…..let's move on.  MTV Roadies. This week’s episode was okay – nothing too exciting. Ankita did an awesome job on both tasks – then a friend told me that she was on Facebook, and her location is STL. Well if its not a fake profile, then Ms. Ankita if you are reading this, then I suggest you add me as your friend, you will get a dinner invite from Neeraj & me. GO PRABHJOT!!!!!!

Crap…next set of MBA classes start on May 19. I had enjoyed the semester off.

I heard that Tashan failed miserably at the box office. Hilarious. I don’t care what anyone says but Kareena Kapoor looks anorexic in that movie. Not a good move by the director on this one.   Akshay Kumar also looked horrible in this movie. Good thing Neeraj and I didn’t go see this one in the theater.

Congrats to my dear Kaush. She finally got the greatest news of her life. I don’ want to tell you so go to her blog and find out — and while you are there, convince her to update it :!: :rotfl:

Thanks also to Kaush with her great tips….she has motivated me to be more aggressive with my exercise workout. I have changed my workout, and I felt really great today. Thanks dear :!: Oh by the way, I bought those Special K strawberry bars – tomorrow I will have one for breakfast, and then I will determine if it is as good as you say they are.

Lakhon tar gaye lakhon ne tar jaana…..Maiyaji tera naam japke…

    Busy Week…Updates from the Past….

Neeraj and I have a lot going on for this week……just like any other week. I am looking for a way to convert a powerpoint file (ppt) to dvd. I have a slideshow that Neeraj and I created of our wedding photos and music that we used behind it that I would like to convert into a DVD. But I am not able to do it using the Roxio DVD Creator software that I have. So if anybody has any suggestions that would be great.

I have to go to the mall this weekend. We will be in Morton this weekend for an engagement party, and we need to get a card to give them. It will be great seeing the family after two weeks.

Neeraj and I have to look at our stuff and what we need to get ready to go back to our MBA classes for the summer. Looking for books is one of the things on target…… :eyebrow:

Then there are always other stuff that come up that we need to complete so the week will hopefully just fly. I would like to update the blog to the latest and greatest WordPress version, but that always get put on the backburner.

We are still looking for bedroom furniture too….we have given ourselves an April 18 deadline to buy it :!:

The past few weeks have been interesting and sometimes stressful. We have seen some movies such as Race and Life in a Metro. Both were okay and not that great. Yesterday we had a wonderful outing by going out and bowling and playing at the awesome arcade that they have at this place called Brunswick Zone. I think that we will be going back to that place soon.

Neeraj has become to invest into the stock market. He is learning a lot, and I love seeing him so interested in doing this. You can talk to him about stocks, markets, buying, and selling for hours.

We got some good things done around the house to get ready for the summer. The automated sprinkler system is now back up and running perfectly. We have also had the exterminator come in and done his part to make sure our home is ready for the summer.

Neeraj and I are both stuck like glue on the MTV India’s show, Roadies. Its just very addicting – very bad language, but very addictive. Anyway, now the next episode is suppose to be in Bangkok and I just have a few words – Go Prabhjot – Say Goodbye to Shambhavi!

    Management in Companies – Don’t Worry I am Watching…..

Sometimes its incomprehensible to me how arrogance can take over a person. Just because you were given a promotion or even a pat on a back, doesn’t mean it makes you better than someone else. I can’t say that this just part of Corporate America because this happens eveywhere. You see it more and more that people can promoted because of what they say and how they can say it, rather than their capabilities. The wrong ones move up and the good ones get left behind. I can’t say that all managers make these mistakes, but it seems there are more of them then the ones that will stick their neck out and make the right decision. Just because you are friends outside of the office doesn’t mean that you need to reflect that on your judgement and decision making in the office. That’s the big mistake that I have seen in my experience that managers/decision makers do on the job.

You must be thinking – why is she writing about this? Did something happen to her recently? No nothing has happened. I have been observing such trends since I entered Corporate America so that I can learn about how business works, to learn, and reflect upon it.

Just recently I told Neeraj that when we open our own IT company, I am going to make sure that such mistakes are not made. I want to be in charge of the internal resources so that I can make decisions that would be best for the company and its employees. People get treatedly badly all the time, sometimes its political. I hate that – there is no reason that politics needs to be involved for the betterment of the company. The shades of gray in business has been brought in by the people and needs to be changed by the influential — that is if you have the guts. That is what I see is lacking in today’s companies. No one takes on the initiative to make the big change because unfortunately they are too worried it will fail. :duh:

You can’t go wrong in your company right? I wouldn’t think so. Its amazing where Neeraj and I are in our lives right now. I see us growing more and more, thinking about such aspects that we had never thought about before, and many people our age don’t think about. We have an action plan for what we want to do 10 years from now – where most people couldn’t even realize where they will be in that time.

You do have to be realistic which I understand. But I know that if I was an authoratative position where I could make the hard decisions for the betterment of my own company, then I could do it. If you don’t have happy employees then all you are going to have is higher turnover and low motivation to get the job done. People should feel that somewhere that company is their own as well, and they should work to make it better, as if it is their own. Alot of people work because they have to not because they want to. Those are another type of people, along with the arrogant ones, that I wouldn’t tolerate in my company. They are only bad news to the company and a deteriment to what could be outstanding for a company. The ideas are flowing like crazy, and I am liking it. Its the time now that Neeraj and I can take to grasp and learn all that we can, gain the experience, so it can be applied when its our turn.

Its easy to make the same mistakes over again that you have seen or if its happened to you. Its harder to achieve the ability to learn from the wrongdoings from others, and take it on as an initative to change and not let it happen again. That’s the passion that I have to do. I have always wanted to make a difference a person’s life, career, or any other way possible. Realistically it will happen – it just takes time.

The other important thing to remember is that the light at the end of the tunnel can be seen – if you just wait and take a hard look. So I will take my frustration that I am seeing today as a positive note, learn from it, and not make the same mistake when I am the decision maker.

Thinking of Opening an eTrade Savings Account? Read it here first.

I have got this ‘one post a month’ routine going on these days that I need to stop. Its just so difficult finding time. There are many times that I think to myself, that is a topic that I need ot blog on, etc… but it just never makes it.

Our immunizations saga still continues…mine is finally done. We are waiting on a response from the university on Neeraj’s immunizations (if they have accepted it). What a hassle! :irked:

Congrats to the Under 19 India cricket team for beating South Africa in the World Cup. After going undefeated in the tournament you deserve the win :!:

As you may have seen in my previous posts, customer service is a big issue for me. If I don’t get the service that I feel that I deserver as a consumer, I blog about it. There are many big companies that have failed in this that I have blogged in the past about such as Verizon Wireless, Air India, Sears, Citibank, and so many more that you could search for on the blog.

Now there is another company that has joined in that realm of unsatisfactory customer service: eTrade. :irked: Its been just about a month or more since Neeraj and I have been trying to get a savings account open with them. Its like dealing with an Indian company. “Well, we need to do this veriifcation, that verification. You will need to fill out this form, that form.”

The reason that we were opening a savings account with eTrade was because our current company, ING Direct have recently slashed their interest rates due to the alleged upcoming US recession. At that time, eTrade was offering a whopping 5% interest rate for a savings account, and so Neeraj and I jumped on it.

A month later, we still don’t have an account open. God knows why because every time we call customer service they really don’t know why the account hasn’t been created either. :banghead:

Now the interest rate is 4.10%. That sucks. ING Direct is still worse so it still makes sense to open the savings account, but it would be nice to get somewhere with the eTrade folks to get it open so that we are able to deposit the money.

So again on Monday Neeraj will call to find out what he needs to do next to get this account open. ING Direct was definitely not this difficult to get the account open. It was a very simple and easy process. Immediately after opening the account we were able to start depositing money. With eTrade, nothing seems easy. :irked:

So if you want to look at savings accounts, you might want to think twice on eTrade… I know that we have now since experiencing such bad customer service. It would be nice that today’s companies start caring for their customer who is bringing in the money rather than not paying attention to them at all. eTrade – wake up!

    Good, Bad, and the Ugly

Here I am again after a long break. Every time I think that I will write more on my blog, those are the times that I write less. I am not sure why that happens. Oh wait, I know….. because job is too busy, because personal life is too busy, because life in general is too busy.

But I do come and visit you dear blog, and I think about you. So I will try to find more time to write to you.

Right now I have something to share with you: the good, the bad, and the ugly since the last time we chatted like this.

    The Good
So many good things have happened since Neeraj’s birthday. Overall it was a wonderful birthday for him. We enjoyed with family and friends, went out to a Mexican restaurant, had good conversation, and overall enjoyed incredibly.

Then the weekend after was my parents wedding anniversary. We went to be with them on their special day which brought in much snow. :cold: That was also enjoyable, and I think they enjoyed having us around together.

Then the weekend after that we went to my cousin Gudiya’s baby shower in Chicago. I am going to be a masi soon, and it is quite exciting for the extended family. Neeraj and I had thought that we would do a small dance for the baby shower, but it didn’t pan out because we didn’t have enough time to practice. Overall there was a lot of snow that night as we reached Chicago, but we had a good time. It was nice to see everyone as well. Wishing Gudiya and Jijs a very happy & safe delivery.

We have made some good financial decisions such as changes to our first mortgage, new savings account, plan to payoff one of the cars, and potentially looking at a long term investment in India.

That made the month of January just fly by… we made some purchases as well. Bought a new 37′ LCD TV on Super Bowl Sunday (it was an amazing deal) for the bedroom. Neeraj is putting together the TV stand as we speak. Then for my Christmas present that just came this week was a treadmill. Now I am able to exercise in the comfort of my own home, which I have wanted for a very long time. I bought Neeraj, for his birthday, the Cricket Ticket package so that he is able to watch the India cricket matches on TV rather the PC.

Saw a good movie last night, Halla Bol. If you haven’ seen it – NP would recommend it.

So overall, the year has started well for us. *touchwood* Let’s hope the rest of the year stays the same way.

    The Bad
Not blogging is bad, not updating to the latest and greatest WordPress edition is also quite bad.

Not getting our transcripts from our first semester of grad school has been bad. :irked: Look for why in the Ugly. :irked:

As for the news, its bad when all the media has to share with you is that Britney Spears being in and out of the hospital (frankly, I don’t care  )……Saif / Kareena married, not married…. again… if you don’t have the facts, don’t share it. Raj Thackeray causing a mockery out of nothing… And that ruthless Joran Van der Sloot still out in the loose when he should be in a jail somewhere.

Having issues with our favorite computer came, Age of Empires Expansion Edition. Don’t know if its the network that is causing the issue (with one of our PCs on wireless it could definitely be a reason  ), or something else. But it has been irritating for Neeraj and me when we are playing the game head to head and then all of a sudden the game comes to a halt. Then you have to restart the game after getting soo involved.

    The Ugly
Customer service. I come to this all of the time. There is an issue with customer service in this country. We are losing it more and more. Companies and their employees are caring less about the customer than ever before. Along with customer service is having employees who know what the heck the company is selling, or be atleast somewhat knowledgeable to help the customer. Recently Neeraj and I have bought many things, but have faced many issues in various top notch stores like WalMart, Best Buy, Target, Circuit City, Sears, etc… where first it takes forever to find someone to help you find something, and then when you do find that person they don’t have any clue about the product that you are looking for — no matter if they are a specialist or not. :irked: Quite frustrating it can be. Another example would be that we had gone to the mall to check out treadmills. First we went to Sears, asked two people who were working in the exercise machine area, both had no clue which treadmill companies their store carried. Then we went to an exercise speciality store, and the “boy” (he seemed like a boy and not a man :lookaround: ) flatly told us that if we didn’t want to buy a treadmill less than $2000 then there is no reason to be in the store. :eyebrow: :fiery: Ok idiot, that can’t be good for business. :talktothehand: So overall, these retail companies need to get their act together. I would say the same for fast food restaurants, especially our favorite Taco Bell, but the hope that you would have a better staff at that type of place is pratically impossible in today’s day and age. Sad isn’t it?

Now the issue with the transcripts. This has been ridiculous what Neeraj and I have gone through to get our transcript from our grad school, SLU. Well first of all you need to get immunizations in order to request your transcript. The reason that we need our transcripts so badly is that because that is the way we are able to get tuition reimbursement from our company. So I turned in both of our immunization forms – in fact I sent it overnight to the university. Then the next day in the afternoon I call them and I get to talk to a very rude lady in the Health and Counseling Services (not a good place for a rude person to be working, don’t you think? ). She told me that no one is here to give me an answer on whether they got my immunization form and that I needed to call back tomorrow. She didn’t tell me the timing of course – that I had to ask.

Then I call the next day again bright and early in the morning. After another lady put me on hold for more than 10 minutes, she comes back and tells me that I need to get two more shots (Tetanus Booster and Tuberculin Skin Test). First of all, I don’t know why as grad students we need to get immunizations. We are on campus for less than 3 hours in one week, and in fact, as an undergrad @ Bradley, where I was on campus throughout the whole day, I didn’t have immunizations done. The harder part was going to be for Neeraj. So then I asked the lady to tell me about what Neeraj needs to have done, and she says that we didn’t get his form. Now lady, both immunization forms were in ONE envelope, how could you have gotten one and not the other???? :banghead: :irked: When you have incompetant people working at places such as these, its then you face such problems.

So I said forget it – we will just go together to the Urgent Care place when we go back to Morton, and Neeraj and I both will get those two shots. So then we went to Methodist Urgent Care in Morton on North Morton Avenue on a Friday afternoon in January. We took all of our immunization forms, prior immunization history, EVERYTHING that we could think of that they may ask. First they asked for all that information, and then we waited. Then the nurse comes through the door and says: VERMA. So I said, “which one”? She said, “Both”. So we both start walking towards her, and then said, “Which one of you is Verma?” I told her that Verma is our last name. It seemed that she didn’t comprehend. Then she said whose form is this one as she pointed to Neeraj’s medical examination form which showed the shots that he had gotten for immigration purposes. She wanted more information about the form, so I told her that he had to get a medical examination for immigration purposes, and this shows which shots he had gotten. You could tell that she didn’t want to understand nor was she listening to what I was saying.

She then took us to a room where we sat. Then numerous times she came in with Neeraj’s form bringing up stupid things, such as there are no dates listed on that medical form. Note that this form is a government document with the original kept with the USCIS, of course there are dates listed everywhere which Neeraj and I pointed out to her. So then she would leave and then come back and bring up some other stupid reason. Now I was getting quite frustrated with her. At the end she said that they will not be able to get Neeraj the TB or Tuberculin test because they don’t know what prior shots he had gotten. So now I was mad. :fiery: We brought you the medical examination form that you don’t want to understand, and now you are causing us grief because we want preventative shots?? This is what our Medical System is all about??? Someone goes to you for help and you tell us that you can’t help us???? :hot: I was upset – and I could have said much more than I did at that time.

So then I told her that to give me the shots. She went back out with my baby book that had all of my shot information since I was a baby. She comes back and says again the dates are not listed. I was pretty pissed off at this point, and I pointed to her to the “Date” column, and said that this is the dates, what don’t you understand??? So then she goes out, and few minutes later comes back and says, “Yes we can do you because your prior history is listed”. FINALLY – the idiot finally understood. :irked: So I got my shots. I saw the doctor for a mere 1 and half minute because the shots were done by the nurse only (a different one from the idiot – thank goodness :!: ).

The first nurse had also said earlier in the conversation that the doctor would have to charge administrative charges, visit charges, etc… At the end when I walked out, I asked how much I needed to pay, and the receptionist said, “nothing”. Great. For all the grief you people caused, I didn’t want to pay you a DIME ANYWAY!!!!!!!! So guess what, Morton Methodist Urgent Care on 1909 North Morton Avenue is strongly not recommended, unless if you want to jump through hoops and cause yourself a heart attack. :banghead:

We finally sent off my papers to SLU, and they have accepted, and now I have requested a transcript copy. Geez louise. What a hassle. Neeraj’s form I still have to fill – who knows if he can even get those two shots done. Its just ridiculous when you can’t even get preventative shots. :irked:
